Org Mode - Expanding a single header only?
[deleted] · 2022-04-23 11:33
Hi,
I recently switched to writing in Org Mode. I want to be able to open just one header to focus my writing in that area, instead of opening multiple with Shift+Tab.
I read online that TAB opens on headline but it doesn't work for me. Any thoughts?

You can narrow a buffer to a header you are working in. Try `C-x n s` (org-narrow-to-subtree).
See: https://orgmode.org/manual/Structure-Editing.html
Edit: I misread your post, use `TAB` to fold or unfold a header

Ahh, it turns out that in evil mode, \`TAB\` does not work in Normal mode. I need to be in insert mode to do it.

Thank you. TAB not opening a headline didn’t annoy me enough to dig into it, but I’m always in normal mode when I do it.

mmmmm... ill look at that then.
Are you using evil mode?

As an Evil user I can confirm that it should work in normal mode.
While in normal mode, press `C-h k TAB` to see what the key is bound to.

You may want to look at org-mode speed commands / keys. If you use org-mode regularly, it's a huge improvement.

It is bound to TAB, <menu-bar> <table> <Next Field>, <menu-bar> <org>
<Show/Hide> <Cycle Visibility>.

Cycle visibility is the correct function, so there must be something else funky going on.
My next move here might be bisecting my config to see if some other package is interfering.

And... the fun begins! lol

You can semi-automate the process using https://github.com/Malabarba/elisp-bug-hunter
