I only use Emacs to run Elfeed anymore.

Unfortunately there are major incompatible changes in Emacs 28 that break many packages. Rather than try to update these packages, if they've even been fixed, I've just removed them since I haven't used most of them in a long time anyway. (I only use Emacs to run Elfeed anymore.) Notably use-package 2.4 is incompatible with Emacs 28, so I had to upgrade to 2.4.1. Evil currently has no releases compatible with Emacs 28, so I just picked the latest commit. Not ideal, but I will hardly use it anyway. \-- skeeto ([https://github.com/skeeto/.emacs.d/commit/1d4614d349ba7f10aa159c833991adcfa10a4acc](https://github.com/skeeto/.emacs.d/commit/1d4614d349ba7f10aa159c833991adcfa10a4acc))

I'm using evil and it's perfectly compatible.

I've been running weekly builds off Emacs' Git master for around a year, and haven't run into anything like this. use-package 2.4.1 [was released in November of 2020](https://github.com/jwiegley/use-package/commit/caa92f1d64fc25480551757d854b4b49981dfa6b), so it's not like 2.4 was broken and 2.4.1 got rushed out after Emacs 28.1 got released. Elfeed *is* super, though.

I run 28 for months now, no issues with any packages and I use something like 2 or 3 hundred packages? Just update all packages, most maintainers keep them up to date with the newest possible Emacs releases.

I haven't had a single package break. I am impressed with Emacs that way. It must be something specific to your particular configuration.

I've never really looked into elfeed. Is it worth it?
sunnyata · 2022-04-22 23:37
Is it worth what?

Worth the time and effort... My understanding is that it's just an RSS feed. There are plenty of other RSS applications that work perfectly. Why should I want to use elfeed over these other applications?
sunnyata · 2022-04-22 23:41
You heard right. If you want to read RSS in Emacs it's worth it. Otherwise, not so much.

None of this is a problem for people who eschew MELPA Stable. Since most Emacs package developers tend not to use MELPA Stable themselves, it often ends up being safer to simply use unstable MELPA combined with a package manager like Straight to pin specific snapshots known to work.

It's worth mentioning that, while what skeeto wrote is public, it doesn't look like it was written in place where he's trying to get feedback or even start a discussion. So, this isn't really meant as a reply to skeeto. I've been using the master branch of emacs for a few years and have had no problems with evil or use-package (or really anything else). I wouldn't let his experience scare you off.
