I've always just went looking, checking one by one, if a key combination is taken or not, and they usually seem to be, and I don't want to overwrite the basic ones, because multiple times I've found later that such and such function is extremely useful after I'd considered it unimportant and rebound its key. Or recently that M-q seems to be unused in the global scope but in paredit mode it actually has a function.
So, is there a system that you use for finding these new homes for functions that need them?

under `C-c` prefix
`C-c p` for projectile, `C-c m` for magit etc

I used to do a doom/spacemacs style of leader menu. Now i just stick things under C-c but i create sub-menus.
For example, i had C-c g bound to magit-status, but i also wanted quick access to magit clone. So i have C-c g c bound to magit-clone and C-c g g bound to magit-status (or whatever the "default" action should be for the category)

I'm not sure if this is what you're asking for, but you can use [free-keys](https://github.com/Fuco1/free-keys) or [unbound](https://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/unbound.el) to find unbound key combinations.

Unexpected, but awesome, thank you.

I usually have extra "layers" of shortcuts grouped thematically with C-. for each mode, by using hydra.
Or some new prefix (c-m) that together with which key opens a submenu with the related keybindings.
This also works using magit-transient.

C-c is so crowded I just pit everything under C-z which is right next to C-c and C-z. Then use whichkey to find my keys

I do `C-z` and `M-z`

C-c does a lot of work in my bindings but things have gotten a little busy. Third party modes in need of a prefix key get bound to Super-<key> (s-g for Magit, s-p for Projectile, etc) and home grown functions are bound to Hyper-<key>.
In my configuration (MacOS, GUI) that's:
`(setq mac-left-alternative-modifier 'super`
`mac-right-alternative-modifier 'hyper)`
It took me a minute (by "minute" I mean a month or so) to adjust to using the alt/opt keys but it's largely been a good idea.

> C-z
a good one, but historically I've been using it as a StumpWM prefix
