Autohide echo area and display above the modeline?

The echo area takes up a bit of annoying space at the bottom and it would be better if most of the time it was not visible. My proposal is to autohide it and when enabled to be displayed above the modeline, that way the modeline won't be dancing around all day. Has anybody done something similar or know if it is possible?

EXWM has an option for this, but I think it does some extra work to make it possible with X applications.

OP clearly said they want to hide the echo area, not the minibuffer. They are very easy to confuse because they appear in the same location (just not at the same time).

He said the echo area "takes up a bit of annoying space at the bottom", so apparently he wants to see nothing there taking up space, and that includes the minibuffer.
