Just found this sub!

_AEthelwulf_ · 2022-04-18 09:34
it's 4am here, can't sleep. I saw a meme on another sub about some other Linux word processor. I remember just loving Emacs in high school. Type "emacs" in the search bar. Feel elated as I see there is a whole Emacs community with 50 thousand people!! I just reinstalled Linux for the first time in like 15 years and I can't wait to muck around and have some fun doing some coding and using it for work and all that fun stuff!

Yeah, Emacs is still kicking around, better than before. And with [LSP](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_Server_Protocol) becoming popular, it's as relevant as any other editor for languages that require complicated support. No longer is there a reason to use Eclipse or something else instead of Emacs.

omg.. emacs.. the mother of all rabbit holes.
Hi_ItsPaul · 2022-04-18 17:08
I seen other users mention productivity as a good reason, but I don't respect their opinion because of their lack of configuration. The only file I need open is config.org
grimscythe_ · 2022-04-18 17:12
Awesome! Have fun and you know you're going to. Especially considering what an endless config rabbit hole Emacs is.

If you haven't used it in 15 years, I recommend the following youtube series to get you up to speed again (and for the first time with a lot of cool new packages): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=74zOY-vgkyw

Linux has changed so much in 15 years, it is very solid and reliable. Check out /r/unixporn to go down the UI/UX customization rabbit hole. Emacs has also changed, but the default user interface has not, what you learned about it 15 years ago is still true today. I learned most about Emacs from the bloggosphere, check out: - [Irreal](https://irreal.org/blog/ ) - [Sacha Chua](https://sachachua.com/blog/ ) - [DistroTube](https://distro.tube/index.html ) and his [YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVls1GmFKf6WlTraIb_IaJg ) - [System Crafters](https://systemcrafters.net/ ) and his [YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/c/SystemCrafters ) - [Protesilaos Stavrou](https://protesilaos.com/ ) and his [YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/c/ProtesilaosStavrou ). If you do IRC (or Emacs ERC) no one uses Freenode anymore since some greedy new owners took over the company, all the crew from Freenode started a new IRC service called https://libera.chat where the Emacs IRC community hangs out nowadays. If you like Lisp languages, Emacs Lisp is great, [Steel Bank Common Lisp (SBCL)](http://www.sbcl.org/ ) is great, [Guile Scheme](https://www.gnu.org/software/guile/ ) is great.

I switched to emacs because of SLIME
noman_032018 · 2022-04-20 00:26
SLIME is one of the few examples where Emacs has historically always had better support for some languages than anywhere else. The Lisp story in general for Emacs is pretty good.
