I'm using Doom Emacs, but I don't think that matters for this issue. I want to create a TODO from an email. I use mu4e for email and a file [todo.org](https://todo.org) to hold my tasks and projects.
Here is my org-capture-templates:
`(setq org-capture-templates`
`'(("t" "TODO item" entry`
`(file+headline "`[`todo.org`](https://todo.org)`" "Inbox")`
`"* TODO %?")`
`("m" "TODO email" entry`
`(file+headline "`[`todo.org`](https://todo.org)`" "Inbox")`
`"* TODO %?\n%a\n%i")))`
(Why did that skip every other line?)
I have a horizontal split with the left window showing [todo.org](https://todo.org) and the right window mu4e headers. I put my cursor on an email header, invoke org-capture-templates, choose 'm', and a new TODO appears with the subject serving as the link to the email. Very cool. This part works great.
Now I'm ready to get to that email. Cursor on the email link, either C-c C-o, or just ENTER, and now my left window has been split with the header for that email showing in the top left of the frame, the body on the lower left with the cursor in the body of the email, and the right hand window just shows the header of the email (same as what the top left shows).
Not at all what I expected. To get out of this mess after reading that email, I can q out of the lower left window, and SPC b l to get back to [todo.org](https://todo.org), Then SPC w w to get to the right window, and SPC b l to get back to mu4e headers.
A lot of farting around with windows. Is this how it's supposed to work?

I am not sure if I understand correctly what is going on (screencast would be helpful here). Generic suggestion would be playing with your display-buffer-alist

Yeah, picture worth many words. Try this again.
Emacs currently looks like this: [https://www.dropbox.com/s/jy2rczzus1qhhk3/1.png?dl=0](https://www.dropbox.com/s/jy2rczzus1qhhk3/1.png?dl=0)
[Todo.org](https://Todo.org) is in the left window and mu4e headers in the right.
Now I pick an email and org-capture it, so I end up with this: [https://www.dropbox.com/s/6fitdztrar3kf12/2.png?dl=0](https://www.dropbox.com/s/6fitdztrar3kf12/2.png?dl=0)
The only change is there is a new todo showing. Now I want to act on the email corresponding to the new link, so I click on it and BOOM. A WTF moment.

I would have expected the left window to remain the same and the single email to occupy the right window.

Appears to be mu4e's fault. See `mu4e-split-view`.

OP of you get a solution you like please share.

Well, it's different. With mu4e-split-view set to single-window, the entire left-hand window shows the linked-to email body. Quit that and I'm left with the headers window with the single entry of the linked-to email, and quitting that brings me back to [todo.org](https://todo.org) buffer.
Setting it to nil wasn't any different.
I guess this is slightly better, but I'd rather all email things stay in one window.

You should probably report this to mu4e's repo https://github.com/djcb/mu
