Emacs livecoding streamers
lujar · 2022-04-12 08:42
As passive entertainment, I find livecoding streams satisfying. There is a community of Twitch streamers who use neo/vim. But there aren't enough emacs livestreamers. I found [tsoding](https://www.twitch.tv/tsoding) and [j\_blow](https://www.twitch.tv/j_blow) but that's it. There is an old reddit thread asking for emacs streamers but it's too old. I was wondering if you guys know any other regular emacs streamers.
Got some response in the comments. I'm gonna keep updating this list:
* [tsoding - Twitch](https://www.twitch.tv/tsoding)
* [Jonathan Blow - Twitch](https://www.twitch.tv/j_blow)
* [Flux Harmonic - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/c/FluxHarmonicLive)
* [System Crafters - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/c/SystemCrafters)
* [facetious\_coding - Twitch](https://m.twitch.tv/facetious_coding)
* [XahLee - YouTube](https://m.youtube.com/c/XahLee/videos)
* [Andrew Tropin - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/c/TROP1N/featured)
* [melchizedek6809 - Twitch](https://www.twitch.tv/melchizedek6809)
* [joseferben - Twitch](https://www.twitch.tv/joseferben)
* [king\_cons - Twitch](https://twitch.tv/king_cons)

There's Flux Harmonics by David Wilson: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=flux+harmonic
He also does an emacs/elisp/guix channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/SystemCrafters

I’ve been live-streaming with emacs, mostly just customizing Nyxt, EXWM and trying to get Guix to a satisfactory place. Would it be okay to drop my link here? I don’t wanna break any sort of self-promotion rule..
Remove if not allowed: https://m.twitch.tv/facetious_coding
Edit: let’s drop the bad phrasing

>mostly just ricing Nyxt...
[That expression conflicts with living my truth](

I’ve suggested on numerous occasion that we call it something else but I feel like I’m swimming upstream there. No offense is intended. I like “boutiquing”
lujar · 2022-04-12 12:38
Oh yeah! I found you a couple of days ago. Didn't know if you were regular, though.
stayclassytally · 2022-04-12 12:43
Trying to be, I’m just getting things figured out with OBS and the two-machine setup

Xah Lee (originator of ergo emacs wiki?) https://m.youtube.com/c/XahLee/videos can not go unmentioned. On the intersection of Emacs, Lisp, Mathematics, keyboards.

I only point it out ironically to evoke an unforthcoming reaction from the mod who first bristled at "ricing." I've always lived by the sticks-and-stones aphorism, and I get as badly worked up about the *suppression* of cheeky cultural epithets as those who find them morally objectionable. I understand one man's cheek baring is another man's sexual assault.

I mean tsoding and jblow use emacs as their editor, but that's about it. They don't teach you anything about emacs. In fact they have recommended you don't learn emacs. This is in contrast to neovim streamers like teej\_dv and theprimeagen, who actually teach you something about neovim.
The only streamer that I am familiar of, that will actucally teach you how to use emacs effectively is System Crafters.
sand-worm · 2022-04-12 16:02
Can recommend Tsoding channel. I’m impressed by this guy and concepts that he explains. Especially Haskell.
And also Zig language author sometimes live coding on twitch. Fun to watch how he fights with low level system calls
lujar · 2022-04-12 16:56
True. Teej and Primeagen are vim streamers, while Tsoding is a programming streamer who just happens to use emacs. Good point.

I mean yeah happy for your stoicism, but you can admit it is a little bit racist?
I think the community would benefit from finding a better word for it but I think part of the problem is no good substitute term exists (that's both short and evocative of no performance gain). It seems like we have given up completely, or never really cared.
For my own sake, potential employers might look at my github and I might have to defend why I used "rice" to describe aesthetics. That probably won't happen, and you can complain all you want, but the optics of not appearing to be racist are helpful in a lot of contexts, not the least of which are making your community a more welcoming place.

[Andrew Tropin](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuj_loxODrOPxSsXDfJmpng) does livecoding with Emacs. Most of his topics cover either Emacs or Guix.
deltille · 2022-04-12 19:19
Man, for some reason I thought the scene for this was a lot bigger. Makes me wish I was sane enough to stream, when I'm screen sharing with friends it's fun to horrify and explain.

https://www.twitch.tv/melchizedek6809 uses Emacs as well
no_name098 · 2022-04-12 21:34
He didn't really do either. Someone asked if he used emacs during one of his streams, and he just replied that he wants to get off emacs (no reason given), but hasn't had time/motivation to look for an alternative.
da-g · 2022-04-13 03:06
Curious, what would you like to see most in an Emacs stream?
oxijosef · 2022-04-13 08:50
I started streaming web & game development using emacs: [https://www.twitch.tv/joseferben](https://www.twitch.tv/joseferben)
(except for when I had to edit 200k lines of JSON, then I used vim)
JohnDoe365 · 2022-04-13 09:28
This is actually saddening that a mere 200k line of JSON forces anyone in 2022 to switch an editor and a clear indication that the core editing functionality of Emacs has to be revamped.
lujar · 2022-04-13 11:27
Just someone working on a project, using emacs, and interacting with chat about questions on emacs. The project they are working on doesn't have to be a emacs plugin or anything. In fact, it's better if it's something unrelated to emacs.
Basically, we just want friends to talk about emacs with, bro. :)
sunnyata · 2022-04-13 14:23
It's hardly an essential term anyway, and seems to be only in the US. I've been using Emacs for more than 20 years and heard it for the first time last year.
king_cons · 2022-04-13 15:39
I recently [started streaming](https://twitch.tv/king_cons) development of an [NES Emulator in Common Lisp](https://git.sr.ht/~kingcons/clones/tree/once-more-with-feeling) and have been using emacs. I work as an Engineering Manager during the week so there are occasional lunch streams but it's mostly Sat/Sun. Finished the CPU instructions last weekend and started on video card registers, hope to be working on input and rendering in a week or two!
lujar · 2022-04-13 16:53
Oh wow! That's really interesting. Good stuff.
ghishadow · 2022-04-14 06:53
looks cool, will check thanks for posting
Hooxen · 2022-04-16 04:10
i do learn some workflow tricks from tsoding though even without him explaining because you can rewind when he does something nifty and play it back in slow mo to understand what he’s doing. it takes a bit of work but still useful to pick up some useful patterns
oxijosef · 2022-04-17 17:50
I just tried it with native comp and it works quite well on the same file, no need for vim anymore on that one.
getpoked · 2022-04-19 21:55
Doesn’t the guy from handmade hero use eMacs
lujar · 2022-04-20 09:14
Yeah, he does. But I think his VODs are behind a paywall? I donno. I'll look into it and, if available for public viewers, add it to the list.
