Building emacs for M1 (current..)

guymadison42 · 2022-04-11 14:42
Is there a link to building emacs from source for the M1, there are plenty out there... but some are a few months old and not very concise... I use brew but that builds the intel version if you build from source. I don't use the GUI, but from terminal and I prefer to build it for terminal. Thanks ahead of time

Just regular configure then make builds just fine for me on an M1.

regular configure builds the m1 version for me (but I'm using the "mac port"). You might check your PATH to see if it has any intel-specific folders ahead of arm-specific folders. Also run `arch` to see if it says arm64.

You can get some problems with libgccjit and gcc. If it doesnt help to use `brew install gcc libgccjit` try launching emacs from terminal.

That was it, I figured out yesterday that the M1 brew path was after the Intel path which caused to pick up the Intel version.. no idea what was going on with brew but it seems to work fine now. Thanks.
