Getting spell checker to work - emacs-plus on Mac

torte13 · 2022-04-08 21:18
I am on an Apple Silicon Mac and following the discussions and recommendations [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/lijn31/best_emacs_port_for_mac_early_2021_edition/) I installed emacs-plus via Homebrew. Overall everything works well except that I cannot get the spell checker to work. I installed aspell (also via homebrew) but when I add `(add-hook 'text-mode-hook 'flyspell-mode)` I get the following error message: Error enabling Flyspell mode: (Searching for program No such file or directory ispell) It appears emacs does not look for aspell in the right path. Ant advice how to get this to work?

It looks like it's defaulting to ispell, which is different from aspell. Try customizing `ispell-program-name` (set to "aspell" in my config).

Also make sure your path is set correctly, i.e. Emacs can find wherever you installed aspell.

Use homebrew, `brew install aspell`

set ispell-really-aspell to t install aspell (generally with brew) verify that aspell is in your path use exec-path-from-shell to be sure the emacs is using that path.

Thank you! That's what I did. aspell is in the /opt/homebrew/cellar folder as is emacs.

>set ispell-really-aspell to t Sorry for the newbie-ness but I take it this goes into my .emcas file? Correct? > use exec-path-from-shell to be sure the emacs is using that path Could you please elaborate how? I am sorry, I am still new to this. Thank you!
