Emacs 28 did not change anything?

cakartantyr · 2022-04-05 13:43
Guyz I have upgraded my system on arch, and emacs comes with 28 . However , still did not notice so much increment on startup etc. I have doom emacs config and after installing 28, I have run doom build, did anything wrong? No performance increment for me at all?

Hej Hej, Arch repo does not include native-compilation: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/74348?project=1&string=emacs

Thx mate

You may want to use the emacs-native-comp-git-enhanced package from the AUR, may take a while to compile tho, and the maintainer of the package uses Clang instead of GCC for the compilation.

That's right, Emacs 28 did not change anything. It is just Emacs 27.2 under a new name. April fools!

Most of the changes ate "under the hood", and some are optional features you will have to enable either at runtime or at compile time. See Changelog for the list of changes. If you already use Doom most of your startup time IA probably spend in external packages anyway, rather then in Emacs core, so it is not strange to not see much difference if any in startup time.

> did not notice so much increment on startup etc ... What changes were you expecting to see?

Yeah I just noticed this today too. I was using an AUR version of 28.095 with native compilation before, then said "hey I should go with the official release of 28.1!" and then what a let down. I think I should just start compiling version 29 from source.

Thanks for the link, glad it's being discussed.

Same as you, i ended up building my own emacs from the sources to learn abit more, but the aur is probably your safest bet if you want to upgrade regularly. Btw when yoy compile yourself from source it only native compile a few common packages, so the compilation was done in a few minutes. The rest will be compiled as you go The aur packages native compiles Everything in avance, which is much longer, but you only do it the first time

Thx for replies guyz, hope they make it default otherwise aur package will be used by most of users Edit: This sh*t hella fast

Good news: the emacs-nativecomp package has made it to Arch extra by now: https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86\_64/emacs-nativecomp/
