Smooth scrolling on Emacs 29 is a dream come true with pixel-scroll-precision-mode.
4goodapp · 2022-04-03 03:40
Hello,
I just installed Emacs 29 this week on macOS and tried the new `pixel-scroll-precision-mode`and I think this, beside *undo region* is the BEST thing that happened to Emacs since I've been using it for 7 years now.
It works sooo well that I think this is a dream.
I wondering how hard it was for Emacs team to implement this feature. I guess it may sound "gimmick" for Emacs poweruser but for me, it's very usefull, specially when scrolling long files.
god_of_potatoes · 2022-04-03 05:22
I am planning to buy a Macbook this fall! Do you think that `pixel-scroll-precision-mode` (vanilla Emacs for that matter) is a significant improvement over `emacs-mac`?
quantum_mattress · 2022-04-03 05:40
Sounds great. How did you install? emacsforosx? brew? build from scratch?
quantum_mattress · 2022-04-03 05:41
also - what happened to emacs 28? It’s not even released yet and everyone is taking about 29.
ndamee · 2022-04-03 05:57
28 is the next stable, 29 is the bleeding edge with the newest features.
agumonkey · 2022-04-03 07:56
> undo-region
this ? https://irreal.org/blog/?p=8614
ps: with thinkpad trackpoint, pixel-scroll is a bit janky but it's still nice to see (thanks to the devs)
ares623 · 2022-04-03 09:18
I thought the maintainers were against implementing macOS specific features? Or is the change platform agnostic?
art_else · 2022-04-03 09:26
Yes, I have it enabled on linux and works great.
art_else · 2022-04-03 09:36
`undo-region` best hidden feature.
Edit: although it would be better named `undo-in-region`.
thefybe · 2022-04-03 10:05
Everybody seems to have good experience with it, but whenever I enable it, it is laggy when scrolling down, and downright freezing my emacs for multiple seconds when scrolling up :(
bruchieOP · 2022-04-03 10:12
If this mean to be able to undo only to a region, It's always been there isn't it? Or as far as I remember
HeyItsLP · 2022-04-03 11:21
It’s very janky on my macbook.
Edit: not the case, with the emacs-plus homebrew package compiling it with native comp and setting up pixel scroll it works great.
holgerschurig · 2022-04-03 12:16
Weird post... (not yours, the linked one) a blog with a screen shot in Twitter from Hackernews where text on the left and right is truncated.
Surely there is a better way to write about it ...
agumonkey · 2022-04-03 12:34
agreed
agumonkey · 2022-04-03 12:36
the post I linked to has emacs 19 doc mentionning C-u C-x u for region aware undo so yeah, and my emacs 29 build doesn't have a `undo-region` command nor function.. M-x confused
nullmove · 2022-04-03 13:03
Yeah I am not an eye candy person but it does look *cool*. Hopefully in time it's added to more window related functions that might require scrolling such as recenter, `C-v/M-v`, `C-</C->` etc.
nullmove · 2022-04-03 13:06
Are you sure you are building with `--with-xinput2` config option? Also make sure you have `libXi-devel` (I think) present as dependency.
4goodapp · 2022-04-03 13:37
I guess it was done briefly but it is one of the best Emacs blog out there.
4goodapp · 2022-04-03 13:37
Yes, that’s it.
4goodapp · 2022-04-03 13:42
I just test it right now on Emacs 29 and I ca confirm it’s working.
4goodapp · 2022-04-03 13:46
Yes, https://emacsformacosx.com/builds > Nightlies
4goodapp · 2022-04-03 13:48
Does it works on Linux terminal tho?
Mine doesn’t on macOS.
4goodapp · 2022-04-03 13:53
Not sure what’s Emacs-mac but the one I have from https://emacsformacosx.com/builds#Nightlies works perfectly well, scrolling just like VSCode.
holgerschurig · 2022-04-03 14:12
Really? Irreal is almost never creating original content. What he writes, you can see on planet emacsen, Emacs weekly news and twitter before he writes about it.
Normally his posts are okay, this one is the unusual. But he's usually just repeating things.

Is there any demo, blog or anything to see these features in action? They sound awesome!
4goodapp · 2022-04-03 14:36
Ohh didn’t know about that.
It’s usually what pop up first on Google result when I am looking for something related to Emacs.
00-11 · 2022-04-03 15:49
Yes, undoing only in the region has pretty much always been there. Here's what `C-h f undo` says in Emacs 20:
> `undo` is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `simple`.
>
> `(undo &optional ARG)`
>
> Undo some previous changes.
>
> Repeat this command to undo more changes.
> A numeric argument serves as a repeat count.
>
> Just `C-u` as argument requests selective undo,
**limited to changes within the current region**.
> **Likewise in Transient Mark mode when the mark is active.**
AxiomShell · 2022-04-03 16:16
I'm using 29 for quite sometime and completely forgot about this.
After your post I enabled it, and yeah, it's a massive difference.
thefybe · 2022-04-03 16:26
I just double checked and the answer is yes to both. Maybe my weak little laptop cannot handle it or it just works better on MacOS.
nullmove · 2022-04-03 16:42
Maybe. I am also using Xorg/Linux on a 10 year old potato laptop myself though. But I also don't use this anywhere other than documents (org-mode, epub/pdf) so perhaps I haven't stress tested it enough.
kickingvegas1 · 2022-04-03 21:13
If this fixes the janky behavior when scrolling images larger than the window size then this feature/fix can not happen too soon. Thrilled about this.
DPaluche · 2022-04-03 23:14
This was my #1 pet peeve on osx pre 2015 when I found emacs. Got used to it eventually, and it has improved, but really looking forward to this.
4goodapp · 2022-04-03 23:27
Same here.
MistakeNotDotDotDot · 2022-04-03 23:40
You can't have pixel scrolling in the terminal because the terminal is effectively a grid of cells that contain symbols (ignoring subtleties of Unicode stuff).
4goodapp · 2022-04-04 00:26
Ohh Okay, thanks for the info.
4goodapp · 2022-04-05 02:01

Here is a [small demo](https://youtu.be/LNK1DnPOqms) showing the difference when it's enabled or disabled.

I'm very content with it until I noticed one big **problem**:
If the scrolling doesn't stop exactly at full lines, that is, if the top of the frame is cutting the top half of some line, then as soon as the user starts editing with the cursor, the Emacs buffer will "**adjust**" itself such that the top of the frame is starting with a whole line, often through scrolling a few pixels up or down. This results in a visual **jitter** when the user is done scrolling (e.g. with the trackpad) and right after one starts using the keyboard to edit the text.
I'm not sure if I've articulated the behavior clearly enough, but I'd love to know if others are facing the same issue, and whether there are workarounds for this. One potential solution that I could think of is to "perform the pixel adjustment" (if needed) right after the user "stops" scrolling. Because it's less distracting then than when the user starts typing.

Am not sure I understand,
maybe a video could help ?
4goodapp · 2022-04-06 07:37
Not sure I understand what you mean.

Well still not sure I get it, maybe an ELI5 would help.
