Finally off doom emacs
10leej · 2022-04-01 14:33
Not gonna lie, doom emacs taught me to love emacs. But really all I used it for was magit, and org mode.
I'd probably use emacs for more in the future, but after realizing how little I used I decided to steer around to vanilla emacs and wow, it's so much faster 0.0
There's still a fe things Im working out, like how to get the status line to be more like doom's and such (Trying out mood-line right now), disable the gui menu and buttons and such, but it's working very well so far.
Plus color me weird, but I kinda like the lisp syntax, maybe I need to dig deeper in it.
Plus I got my emacs config placed into ~/.config/emacs but a lot of guides are saying I should use ~/.emacs.d does it really matter where my config is?

You know, you could just use this package: https://github.com/seagle0128/doom-modeline

Is this an April Fool's post, or did you really go from Doom to Vanilla (including Vanilla keybindings)?

>There's still a fe things Im working out, like how to get the status line to be more like doom's
You could just use [doom-modeline](https://github.com/seagle0128/doom-modeline) , it is the default Doom Emacs modeline but as a separate package. But if your willing to go more minimal, I would keep playing with the mood-line package, that's a great modeline.
>disable the gui menu and buttons and such
This should make it better, give it a try.
```
(push '(menu-bar-lines . 0) default-frame-alist)
(push '(tool-bar-lines . 0) default-frame-alist)
(push '(vertical-scroll-bars) default-frame-alist)
(setq inhibit-startup-screen t)
(setq inhibit-startup-echo-area-message t)
(setq inhibit-startup-message t)
(setq inhibit-default-init t)
(setq inhibit-x-resources t)
(setq inhibit-startup-buffer-menu t)
(setq initial-scratch-message nil)
(setq use-file-dialog nil)
(setq use-dialog-box nil)
```

Of a functional perspective, no. But if you don't like your $HOME folder with tons of dotfiles like me you should keep the emacs folder in $HOME/.config.

I did the same lol! Doom's just too slow, it was supposed to be faster than spacemacs but I feel like maybe it isn't anymore? Also I don't like evil anyways.
10leej · 2022-04-01 16:28
actually doom to vanilla, I did setup evil mode
jack-of-some · 2022-04-01 17:07
I went the same route from Spacemacs. It took me a week to build my own config but it was well worth it. Been using it for 2 years. It's broken twice and I was able to quickly fix it whereas Spacemacs used to break all the time and I always struggled to figure out a fix.

There’s also [mood-line](https://github.com/jessiehildebrandt/mood-line) which is like a slimmed down version of doom-modeline.
If you just want the look but don’t care for all the functionality, it’s great.

This is sweet, thanks for posting this

I don't really enjoy evil mode, but there's a few too many vim tricks I learned that I haven't been able to unlearn.
xtifr · 2022-04-01 21:02
I recommend *not* turning off the GUI menu. It really doesn't take up much space, and it's extremely useful while you're still learning Emacs. And, because Emacs is *so* big and complex, it can still be useful after many years of using Emacs. I've been using Emacs for over two decades, and, after a brief period of turning it off, I turned it back on and left it on.
Even if it's not something you use every day, it's still useful for tracking down that feature you only use every once in a while. Or for exploring the features of a new mode you're trying. It's particularly useful because C-h k works with the menu! So you can easily get the full help for any menu item you're curious about.
On the other hand, that silly tool bar can eff right off! :)
>Plus I got my emacs config placed into \~/.config/emacs
That's the new standard, and it's good. Guides that don't recommend it are likely older ones, from before that became the new standard. But no, in the end, it really doesn't matter where your config is.
jvillasante · 2022-04-01 21:15
Every time I try to get out of Evil, I can't go past the tutor.
Really, for me, Vim keybindings (Evil) are just better for text editing.
But I shall try again!

The speed bump is not doom's fault per se. It is more an effect of emulating vim (evil mode). It's fast enough for most work though. But yeah, given everything else is held equal, vanilla emacs is much snappier.

> Plus I got my emacs config placed into ~/.config/emacs but a lot of guides are saying I should use ~/.emacs.d does it really matter where my config is?
By putting your config in ~/.emacs.d/init.el, you are making your Emacs configuration more self-contained if you would like to just copy your folder and transfer it to another computer. But that only works, if your entire configuration is written in such manner too. If you use absolute and hard-coded paths to applications, files and folder, then it won't work anyway. Other than that, I don't think it matters if you put it in ~/.config or ~/.emacs.d.
holgerschurig · 2022-04-02 13:22
I went from vanilla to Doom (with emacs key bindings). Although lots of my old config is still there: https://github.com/holgerschurig/emacs-doom-config/blob/master/config.el
To each his own, I guess.
holgerschurig · 2022-04-02 13:24
> Doom's just too slow
Really? Not for me: "Doom loaded 182 packages across 34 modules in 0.671s".
And even working it it isn't slow. Probably because of my personal selection of [activated modules](https://github.com/holgerschurig/emacs-doom-config/blob/master/init.el) ?
holgerschurig · 2022-04-02 13:24
You can use Doom with Emacs key bindings --- this is what I do.
jvillasante · 2022-04-02 15:02
That would be a good alternative to get used to vanilla keybindings before going all the way with a custom config. However, I imagine that it will still require a lot of work. I think (can be wrong here) that Doom is *itself* heavily invested in Evil and built around Evil.
thetemp_ · 2022-04-02 15:39
Another (IMO) indispensable package that Doom uses is [helpful](https://github.com/Wilfred/helpful). It's what provides those amazing help buffers that show you the source code for everything and link to a search for all references, etc.
And don't forget doom-themes either...
I switched to a vanilla config about 9 months ago. But I still raid Doom's GitHub server on a regular basis for ideas. It's just so good.

+1.
You can also use `M-x menu-bar-mode` whenever you want, to toggle it on/off. And if you do that often then just bind that command to a key.
Menus are useful for things like discovery. They organize commands, putting those that (in some sense) belong together, together.
----
You can also use the keyboard to access menu items, and if you use a good completion framework or completion style then you can match items anywhere in the menu hierarchy ... if you use library [La Carte](https://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/LaCarte) ([code](https://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/download/lacarte.el)).
tgrnh · 2022-04-02 20:04
When I recently tested Doom I disabled the evil, doom-modeline, dashboard and maybe some other modules by just commenting the lines and it was completely fine. They were enabled by default, but optional.

I went from spacemacs to doom to vanilla with viper. I prefer my tools to be simple and snappy and not bloated.
And really, imho Emacs is a specialized environment for running elisp for text manipulation. Not an ide or text editor. An embedded lisp machine. And it's not true that it lacks a good text editor. It already should with one vi implementations and has other to choose from
