I have what I believe is the same book in storage. Doubt my kids will understand its significance after I die. However, I've told them "Hands off!" a couple of times when they found it.

Just be happy they don't turn out to be Vim users!
rk45 路 2022-03-31 15:29
Feel free to x-post it :)

Pretty strange how emacs was already at version 18 just two years after its first public release
bdevel 路 2022-03-31 17:12
Nice! However, I'm going to have to one up you... I have the Fifth edition, same version! Marked December 1986. I'll post. Still trying to find anything earlier... Does yours have odd copying artifact on the outside edge of the pages that look like perforated metal? Trying to figure out what that could have been.
bdevel 路 2022-03-31 17:21
Put a book mark in there labeling at as "valuable". Hopefully they'll sell it on eBay for a future emacs fans.
harizvi 路 2022-03-31 17:48
I've that version as well, acquired somewhere in early 90s.
bdevel 路 2022-03-31 18:09
I believe it's the equivalent to 1.8 in the semantic versioning format.
stormrider-io 路 2022-03-31 18:21
back when he was kinda "GNUgus khan" -- before he became "Saint IGNUcius" and then whatever he's become now.
rk45 路 2022-03-31 18:59
Nice ;) I'll check when I'm back in the office.

The timeline has the following, starting from the (probably) first public release version: * GNU Emacs 13.0? (20-mar-85) * GNU Emacs 15.10 (11-apr-85) * GNU Emacs 15.34 (07-may-85) * GNU Emacs 16.56 (15-jul-85) * GNU Emacs 16.60 (19-sep-85) * GNU Emacs 17.36 (20-dec-85) If I was to guess, I'd say that either (a) "significant" changes were happening frequently enough in those early days that RMS felt a version bump made sense; or else (b) he bumped the minor version number with each change, and every time that reached 99 he cycled the major number. This was roughly a decade after the TECO version and there were various intermediate implementations, so I can't tell whether that version 13 represents a starting point to differentiate it from other Emacsen, or if the version had simply been bumped that many times before it reached a releasable state (or some combination of the two). (Answering my own question: if you look in the [`NEWS.1-17`](https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/emacs.git/tree/etc/NEWS.1-17) file in your copy of Emacs (alongside `C-h n`) you can read the feature history dating back to version 1.1. Which is a fact I must have observed before now, but evidentially never committed to memory.) From that point major version changes were roughly 4-6 years apart for a long time, but in relatively recent times they've only been about 2 years apart. * https://www.jwz.org/doc/emacs-timeline.html * https://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/emacs/ (What any of this actually represents is left as an exercise for the reader :)

just version format is different.

How about users in evil mode?
Firewolf420 路 2022-04-01 01:39
Still evil!
johnreads2016 路 2022-04-01 01:40
I have one from early 87. Still using emacs wherever I wander.
StrangeAstronomer 路 2022-04-01 02:48
Snap! I have exactly that edition! I only bought it in order to throw a little money at the author as I was already using emacs for some time (micro- and gosling- as well as gnu-).
trs_80 路 2022-04-01 03:03
I wonder (seriously) how much of the information in there might still be valid to this day.
itistheblurstoftimes 路 2022-04-01 03:40
About $20 on ebay in case anyone was wondering.
Tiv0w 路 2022-04-01 10:17
Even to M-x-post it !
tomatoaway 路 2022-04-01 11:29
Or label it "cursed". Hopefully they'll grow up in terror of it and do away with with with this whole programming "fad" altogether. (our time is numbered)
tomatoaway 路 2022-04-01 11:36
I believe it's `C-u 15 Dr` Stallman https://stallman.org/articles/dr-stallman.html
stormrider-io 路 2022-04-01 14:42
hmm. weird. i know someone who has a double PhD in EE and CS, and he doesn't like to be called "doctor" outside of some very specific professional settings. his reasoning is that it implies broader knowledge than is warranted. "If we're talking about gardening," he says, "which I know nothing about, and which I am terrible at, people make unwarranted assumptions about my knowledge. That gets in the way of friendship. It's like wearing a stethoscope into a hospital -- it gives people false hope."
rk45 路 2022-04-05 12:20
Nop it does not :)
