Org Mode. Is there a way to say something like hey Google, new to do, buy some milk, and then have Google append that todo as an org file (on my drop box or other synced file system)?

Status-Detective-783 · 2022-03-30 17:24
I'm currently sending email messages to myself, and then later trying to go through them, and copy paste over to my orgmode file. But that is labor intensive, and it makes me delay that administrative task. I'd rather just be able to pick them up directly in emacs as to do items in a file or even just headings in a file would be fine. Or even just single lines in a file I guess. Well now that I think about it, I suppose this isn't really an emacs question, but this was the first place I thought of asking since I figured others may have wanted to do this as well, and might have some solutions.

[org-capture](https://orgmode.org/manual/Capture.html) is what you're after. If you use Emacs as your email client you will also be able to org-capture directly from an email.

You want to integrate the google voice api into Orgzly for this. I think a popular GTD app has google voice integration that could serve as a reference.

How?
Hastrack · 2022-03-30 21:00
You could just create a file in a syncthing folder and use org-capture to register news todos into the file.

This is perfect! I already have Google voice to Google sheets integration pretty much like he set up. So all I need to do is implement the second half of that process. Thank you!
Status-Detective-783 · 2022-03-30 22:19
I don't know, isn't that still kind of a disjointed process? I mean, I really don't know how this would work or if this might have more friction than what I'm looking for. I'm thinking if I can just say hey Google, create new to do, my shirts will be ready at the cleaners next Thursday after 6:00 p.m.. then that gets added to an inbox. On the other hand, the benefit of an email is that it is naturally divided into subject and content, which would make it a little easier to divide into org mode header and details.

I don't now of a package that captures via incoming emails. I wrote something that kind of did this with mu4e by plugging into mu4e-alert. If there is something out there I would like to know it.

For a F/LOSS alternative to Google, there is Rhasspy ([GitHub](https://github.com/rhasspy/rhasspy), [forums](https://community.rhasspy.org/)). I played around a little with it before, and it actually works fairly well! It's going to be a lot more flexible, free (as in freedom), and private than using a proprietary cloud service.
Status-Detective-783 · 2022-03-31 04:05
> Rhasspy Well that took me down a rabbit hole lol. Thanks! That's really neat, but I don't think that does voice transcription?
holgerschurig · 2022-03-31 05:06
I'd never say "Hey Google" or "Hey Alexa". These services basically turn your devices into eavesdropping devices. I don't need a personal Stasi.
T_Verron · 2022-03-31 07:15
New to that rabbit hole too, it seems it does: [https://rhasspy.readthedocs.io/en/latest/speech-to-text/#open-transcription](https://rhasspy.readthedocs.io/en/latest/speech-to-text/#open-transcription)

I think OP might already know that, and also it doesnt address at all their question
trs_80 · 2022-03-31 19:41
No, it doesn't, sorry. But I took your OP as more of a limited set of pre-programmed commands. Which is all that most of these "AI"s (like Google assistant, etc.) are capable of doing anyway, really.
Status-Detective-783 · 2022-03-31 22:47
Google Assistant can do true, open-ended, voice-to-text transcription. As long as your words aren't too specialized, I often use it to look up stuff, and sometimes for composing text messages. "Hey Google, send an email." "Ok, who are you sending it to?" "Myself" "Ok what's the message?" "I need to remember to set up an automated pomodoro system." "Ok, your message is, I need to remember to set up an automated pomodoro system. Do you want me to send it, or change it?" "Send it". "Message sent".

Well, that's still following a script, except that one part. But you got me there. Years ago (last I used it) it still couldn't do that. It was quite limited. In the end, freedom and privacy are far more important to me (personally) than gee-whiz features, even though I love technology. Cheers.
holgerschurig · 2022-04-01 06:39
Yes, I intentionally didn't want to address the question. And no, few people know that this technics is used to monitor people. There are cases where the police arrived out of the blue, because of recordings from these services. So I think making people aware of the privacy problems whenever it is hyped as a super good technology isn't off-topic.

I've recently seen a YouTube on a project to build a Raspberry Pi based Alexa clone. It seemed to work pretty well and did all of it's front end processing locally then passed the parsed query to Google or something. Gets past the problem with privacy.

I thought about trying to set something cool and custom up, but realised I really didn't want to maintain it. Now I: use the built in note taking system ("Hey google take a note"), and have reviewing those notes as part of my weekly review. It does mean that I can't capture any urgent tasks that should be looked at in less than a week though.
Status-Detective-783 · 2022-04-16 18:51
Thanks. I say, "Hey google send a text" Who do you want to text? Myself Sure what's the message? Remember the milk. I got "remember the milk" ready to send it? yes "Sending the message." Note that I had to add myself as a contact. "I gave me a name First name: MYFIRSTNAME Last name: MYLASTNAME Me Meme Myself The value of this, of course, is that I'm going to look at my texts. I had to use "Meme" just because it didn't seem to like "Me". I think I later added "Myself" as well. One could use an automation or IFTTT recipe to do something similar with text or email.
