mistarchou · 2022-03-29 12:47
I like it.
mistarchou · 2022-03-29 12:58
I'm not the native speaker, can you help me understand it?

Fair enough

Very cool. Thank you for sharing!

Cool!
grimscythe_ · 2022-03-29 13:45
That's cool
ahk-_- · 2022-03-29 14:00
Full name for Emacs is GNU Emacs, so DraGNU where U is silent ;)
mistarchou · 2022-03-29 14:14
Brilliant! Thank you for the explanation!
susanne-o · 2022-03-29 14:31
And in the tradition of naming a software clone as not-the-original, we have not-unix, NU, which sounds like a certain animal, which has a silent G at the beginning: gnu. And to avoid horrible confusion and mix-up with the gnu animal (silent 'g'), the GNU system has a pronounced, audible 'g' at the beginning.
And now you know
- how the GNU system got it's name
- why emacs has said animal as a logo, or now the DraGN ;-)
- why the animal in the emacs logo is pronounced G-NU and not (g)nu despite the fact that it's part of the not-unix NU system
Welcome to the fine and delicate sense of humor of the original emacs author and GNU founder
PS since we're at it: The name emacs goes back to editor macros, so it's not eee-maex but ehh-mucks ...
Thanks for the nice logo

Wicked! I love it!
kinleyd · 2022-03-29 15:27
It's really good!
ilemming · 2022-03-29 15:31
Looks more like a crippled seahorse than a dragon, tbh.
ogalego · 2022-03-29 16:31
Beautiful! (:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_seadragon. Just saying …

**[Common seadragon](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_seadragon)**
>The common seadragon or weedy seadragon (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus) is a marine fish related to the seahorses. Adult common seadragons are a reddish colour, with yellow and purple markings; they have small leaf-like appendages that resemble kelp fronds providing camouflage and a number of short spines for protection. Males have narrower bodies and are darker than females. Seadragons have a long dorsal fin along the back and small pectoral fins on either side of the neck, which provide balance.

Seadragon?
Nope, Can't see the dragon.
Have some weed
Oh, shit. I can see the dragon now... it's very weedy

Now I am wondering how many people have GNU tattoos.
Personally, I am not a tattoo-doer, but I imagine it (as with the stylised gnu horns of Emacs' "E") would render pretty well; it's simple enough and obscure enough to elicit interest from strangers, and recognition by acolytes of the Church of Emacs.

I like it.

Very interesting, I learned a lot today. Thank you for the awesome detailed info. I think I can get the humor now. Here is a try:
A funny fact: nu in English pronounced like niu(new) with a silent i in the middle in Chinese. niu means Bovine in Chinese, and gnu is also a Bovine.
Darksair · 2022-03-29 21:50
Ah the [Emacs-China](https://emacs-china.org) logo.
mistarchou · 2022-03-29 22:16
Yes, the dragon in Emacs-China logo with improved details and the background of Emacs logo.

Reminds me of a [knucker](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knucker).
A creature that lives in deep holes the bottom of which are unknown by mortal men and only leaves to occasionally terrorize livestock and the innocent seems like an appropriate herald for emacs.
deltille · 2022-03-30 02:09
Thank you for patiently explaining this.
susanne-o · 2022-03-30 04:55
Appreciate it. They created that logo, which takes time, so I happily gave back a little time to tell where the original logo comes from, the stylized gnu horns, and why gnu, of all animals, that's all.
onetom · 2022-03-30 05:24
because that squiggly line is reminiscent of a dragon?
Emacs also had a kitchen sink and a buffalo icon before, so why not? :)
Miciah · 2022-03-31 01:05
> The name emacs goes back to editor macros, so it's not eee-maex but ehh-mucks ...
Now I'm confused; how do you pronounce "macros"? I pronounce "macros" as [/ˈmæk.ɹoʊs/](http://ipa-reader.xyz/?text=%CB%88m%C3%A6k.%C9%B9o%CA%8As) and "Emacs" as [/ˈiːmæks/](http://ipa-reader.xyz/?text=%CB%88i%CB%90m%C3%A6ks).
susanne-o · 2022-03-31 05:36
Oh you do? Hm.
I'm only passing on what RMS told on a Linux congress in Berlin 1996
Also in both British and American English the boring _standard_ pronunciation for macro is like /ˈmakrəʊ/
Miciah · 2022-03-31 17:58
Interesting. [Wiktionary has](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/macro#Pronunciation) /ˈmæk.ɹoʊ/ (US) and /ˈmæk.ɹəʊ/ (UK), but /a/ and /æ/ are very close (useful reference: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_front_unrounded_vowel>), and both the US and the UK have plenty of regional variations in pronunciation, generally speaking.
I'm still confused by your "ehh-mucks" example; do you pronounce "muck" as /mak/ and not as /mʊk/, or were you going for a schwa sound?
susanne-o · 2022-03-31 21:32
muck: /mʌk/
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/muck
which sounds similar enough to
macro:
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/macro
but you know what?
**forget all I said about the pronunciation**
For whichever reason [Saint IGNUtius himself says /iːmæks/](https://youtu.be/1jPmnDZ6ab8?t=19) these days. The "Editor MACroS" part of his talk was correct, the pronunciation was his humor in 1996...
[/mʌkrəʊ makrəʊ mækrəʊ iːmæks/](
http://ipa-reader.xyz/?text=m%CA%8Ckr%C9%99%CA%8A%20makr%C9%99%CA%8A%20m%C3%A6kr%C9%99%CA%8A%20i%CB%90m%C3%A6ks&voice=Joanna)
thanks for pointing me to the ipa-reader and thanks for being obnoxious ;-) TIL
