It's about goddamn time.
shaggy_amreeki · 2022-03-25 10:25
I am new to emacs, what is he known for exactly?
georgist · 2022-03-25 12:02
re-org - thought this was about org mode, no it's about a corp re-org!

Well he's a famed hacker, his blog was very popular for rants on all things programming: https://steve-yegge.blogspot.com/.
On the emacs world he was famous for the js2-mode for javascript.

I occasionally wish there was a way to do to the tech community what Bezos did at Amazon when he banned PowerPoint, and ...
Ban YouTube as a transmission medium for technical content.
I suspect the vast majority of people can read faster than the average YouTube content creator can speak.
I can definitely scan a page of text and decide if I need to read it in detail MUCH faster than I can do the same to a video.

There’s a way to skip videos faster too
ndamee · 2022-03-25 16:44
He should at least add chapters, so one can quickly jump to a specific topic in the video.

He's already a successful blogger and has written a number of very popular rants. His goal is not to educate people about Emacs, it's to grow the audience for his podcast and YouTube channel. He's pretty transparent he'll do whatever it takes to do that.

Thanks for linking this! I wasn't aware that he was publishing videos.

Totally agree. And you can copy and paste snippets straight into your own emacs. I'd prefer if everything was text. I teach CS and have switched from making presentations with LaTeX to org-present, so much more seamless for switching to live coding etc. I don't promote that way of doing things too much but sometimes those who can see the potential ask me about what on earth I'm using to do it.

I enjoy reading but I vastly prefer videos for Emacs content. Watching somebody do something is far more powerful compared to reading about it.
Sometimes I watch tech videos at the end of my workday to relax and learn something new in the process. Video content is much better for that than somebody's blog, especially since most developers are terrible at writing engaging, coherent prose.

It is possible to have both - I've seen pages of text describing actions interspersed with clips showing the action.
