Black and gray with zero syntax highlighting theme

[deleted] · 2022-03-20 03:41
A theme with *exactly* two colors. Font effects other than color are okay. Does anyone know if this exists or if there is an easy way for me to set all backgrounds to black or dark grey and all else to light grey, and vice versa for reverse video? I've been looking and every single one ends up doing a little syntax highlighting in org mode.

Unfortunately, that doesn't leave formatting stuff in place, like italic and bold, but it'll probably be good enough for now. Thanks for the suggestion.

I see that you're not a fan of syntax highlighting either! To get started, you can make most things monochrome by evaluating the following form. Org mode levels inherit from these faces so you're set. (dolist (f '(font-lock-builtin-face font-lock-preprocessor-face font-lock-constant-face font-lock-negation-char-face font-lock-constant-face font-lock-doc-face font-lock-function-name-face font-lock-keyword-face font-lock-string-face font-lock-type-face font-lock-variable-name-face font-lock-warning-face racket-selfeval-face racket-keyword-argument-face sh-heredoc sh-quoted-exec)) (custom-set-faces `(,f ((((type graphic) (class color) (background light)) :inhert default))))) This snippet is directly from my custom theme so you might want to change the class part of the face.

Poet Monochrome might be what you're looking for.

My motivation is more of an experiment, realizing that the color is a little distracting from the text itself. I might be wrong, but trying a highly minimal theme might be what I need to increase my focus. Maybe I'll become a fan later. Hopefully I don't become distracted by the lack of color either :3

I counted 6 colors on just the screenshots. Although it did make me realize that maybe a third separate HL line color would be better than reverse video for Vertico.

Turns out that because monochrome themes are so simple, it's a great time to use M-x customize-face (might be eating those words in a few weeks, as I've been seduced by the "easy customization menu" in my earlier days of Emacs). Starting with the poet theme, I just M-x customize-face'd everything that wasn't the right color. There are a few things that seem to have slipped beneath the cracks, but now 99.99% of the interface is two color, except for hl-line, which is just a hair off the background gray.

Thanks for the suggestion. It still required some tweaking, but M-x customize-face was adequate for that in this case.
