The Font although nice, is $75 for a license to use. This is the Emacs thread, not your free advertisement channel. Also GNU is not really compatible with that closed non-sense.

Creators need to feed their kids. Typography is extremely time intensive and takes years to build a font. $75 is a bargain.

The man said that this is not a free advertising subreddit and that Emacs is not compatible with this type of license.
-Anti_X · 2022-03-19 17:36
On another note, I'm sure that typography is a hard and honorable job. But if it takes someone *years* to build a single font then I would suggest that they reconsider their career choice.

Idk, it comes across as dismissive "closed non-sense". Why so much toxicity and antagonism?
spacequarks · 2022-03-19 17:47
Society flourishes when artists create works, and based on their merits, the work is rewarded. Our museums would be empty if it weren't for people that sponsored those art works, sustained their livelihood and propelled culture forward.

To *properly* build a font requires thousands of characters in various alphabets for numerous languages, and tuning the kerning between them etc.. It's a major job. Just making ASCII characters in monospace might be a hobby job that could be done quickly, but a *serious* font is much more than that. Canonical sponsored Dalton Maag to make the Ubuntu typefaces and it was a major multi-year job to build it out as a comprehensive font family *properly*, and they're free/libre. They released basic fonts and then over time extended the family and alphabet coverage. I've always liked the look of them, especially Ubuntu Mono for coding.

Absolutely. One of my favorite typefaces is Proxima Nova by Mark Simonson. Yes, it is "closed non-sense" in the words of OP, but it has made a remarkable impact on the world. The same people that complain has benefited while they read airport signs in Proxima Nova. https://www.marksimonson.com/fonts/view/proxima-nova What a strange crowd. I love open source and it is amazing that humans can get together and build common building blocks, but the GNU crusaders are toxic, dismissive and disrespectful as they type away on proprietary devices built by thousands of engineers and semiconductors built by large proprietary fabs. Utterly deranged. Some even forget that UNIX was proprietary and so was its philosophy.

I have no connection to this font other than liking it. I thought other people might be interested, that’s all. People post in this subreddit about their favorite fonts all the time. This isn’t emacs-devel.
-Anti_X · 2022-03-19 18:11
Alright, I had underestimated the difficulty of making a *proper* font so I came with this uneducated statement. Thanks for telling me 🙂
-Anti_X · 2022-03-19 18:13
I'm not saying that artists should not be rewarded mate...
-Anti_X · 2022-03-19 18:45
I think it's the normal reaction. If I use this font on my emacs config and push that to my remote repository, not only is my GNU license no longer functional but if someone wished to try it out then there will be legal trouble. It's the natural reflex to stay out of anything proprietary when you're making open source software or public configurations.
spacequarks · 2022-03-19 18:54
Font would be installed in the system fonts directory though, no?
nrnrnr · 2022-03-19 20:36
Hey, Emacs works with any system font. If OP likes the font and wants to license it, that’s totally compatible with Emacs. I personally don’t see the value for money here, but it is a nice-looking font.
jimehgeek · 2022-03-20 01:11
This font does look very nice, and could see myself using it. However main reason for that is that it looks more than reasonably similar to Apple’s Menlo font which I’ve been using for over 10 years, so no wonder I like the look of Berkeley Mono :)
smrndmusrnm · 2022-03-20 02:48
This font is > $700 for the collection... There is also the [MonoLisa](https://www.monolisa.dev/) font for $200 I like the free [IBM Plex](https://github.com/IBM/plex) font, which is well developed.

This has been removed, as posts must relate to emacs.
