Any emacs user that uses Wayland & Sway?
endritiyay · 2022-03-17 14:16
I tried to adapt this config [https://github.com/tecosaur/emacs-config](https://github.com/tecosaur/emacs-config) but a lot of cool features in the config don't work because they use Xorg apps. I'd like to know if there's someone that already went through this route so I can see how they did it

I use Wayland and Sway but I haven't used anything from Tecosaur's config that depends on xorg. Have you tried using xwayland?
endritiyay · 2022-03-17 14:46
I have, then I decided to make it only wayland native because I like the performance. What I'm looking is a way to make most of those features work natively on wayland. Future users could benefit from that too I guess

Out of interest, why do you use wayland? I remember trying it for a few months back when it was the newest hype, but I eventually switched back to X because wayland just never seemed to get anywhere and too many things were simply missing.

That's quite true actually. In my case it's just that I use firefox a lot and watch streams on twitch most of the time. On X RAM usage would be huge and I couldve used a bit more RAM. When I tried wayland out I found that the watching video part and sharing video takes a whole less performance, which was a big plus for my average laptop (i5-gen4 8gbram with intel integrated graphics)

I'm using Wayland on Fedora 35 Gnome and the experience is incredible, 0 screen tear and everything works like I want it to.

I think the only thing that isn't `Wayland` native is the use of the `Emacs Everywhere` package, which relies on `xclip`, `xdotool`, `xprop`, and `xwininfo`.
Also, maybe the default frame sizing wouldn't work well with `sway`.
What features of his config weren't working for you?
Teco's config is one of the most extensive and customized `doom emacs` configs that you'll find.
I've borrowed liberally from it for my own configs.
I use `Wayland` and `sway` on a couple of different systems.
You're welcome to peruse them if you want to. I'll warn you in advance that they're messy and there is very little original code in them.
Here is my literate config for `doom emacs` that I use on my desktop PC that runs `Manjaro` and the `sway` window manager. It's meant to be as Wayland native as possible.

Here are the dotfiles for my laptop that I've been using more recently and more often.
It's using `arch (btw)`, `sway`, and the dotfiles include my `.doom.d` configs.

True. My solution for this was to buy more RAM, but that's not always feasible. Firefox in general is a terrible memory hog.

I'll go ahead and try these. Thank you so much!
I think Screenkey and Screencast don't work either from my experience. Those animated gifs look so cool
BettaGeorge · 2022-03-17 15:20
Maybe I should give it another go then. It would be nice if we could get rid of the mess that is X someday.
Kefim_Wod · 2022-03-17 15:21
Ah, that would make sense.
Those are two features I haven't used but now I'm curious.
For a more polished approach to `Wayland`, `sway`, and `doom emacs` you can check out these dotfiles.

His blog post related to his `Wayland` setup is linked in the README.

Not the OP but over the last year I've switched to using `Wayland` as much as possible.
It still has rough edges but so far I haven't run into anything significant that I can't do with it.
I don't use `Linux` for work so that's probably a big part of it. They're my personal machines that I can afford to tinker with.
Why I started using `Wayland` isn't complicated. I'm very interested in novel things for the sake of novelty.
However, once I made the attempt it became apparent that it was perfectly usable. I think a big reason why I stuck with it has been because of the `sway` tiling window manager which I've become an avid user of.

My work machine is as regularly broken as my personal one ^^
Though Google tells me that exwm is apparently not compatible with wayland, so I guess I'm stuck with X for the foreseeable future. Ain't nothin' gonna make me give up my WM.
Kefim_Wod · 2022-03-17 15:53
Ah, that's true. EXWM is one of those things that I'd like to try but not enough to abandon Wayland.
If I'd already been using EXWM I might not have made the jump.

I am using X11 on Arch Linux with everything latest and have no screen tear and everything works the way like I want it to. Worked so since I installed the OS on this machine back in 2017.

The fedora 36 release won't be too far, and gnome 42 will be a great opportunity to try a well integrated wayland. Or KDE but definitely try a larger distribution that has experience with wayland

Haha, Wayland is one of those things that I'd like to try but not enough to abandon EXWM ;-)
BettaGeorge · 2022-03-18 00:11
Oof, no way. Wild horses couldn't drag me into a non-tiling window manager.
i3 has a wayland port, I might give that a whirl as an experiment. But in the long term, I don't see myself giving up exwm.

Try keycast and gif-screencast. For last one you should enable taking Screenshots by Emacs itself. I forgot exact option name, check it by customize.

I use sway since 2020 and PGTK emacs version. Here is my [config](https://github.com/Crandel/home/tree/master/.config/emacs)
