Helm hogging CPU resources

danderzei · 2022-03-17 09:12
Hi, My Emacs regularly drives CPU usage to 100%. After some searching I ran a profiler report and it seems that Helm is using lots of resources. Am I interpreting this correctly? These are all entries 40% or over: - command-execute 1625 70% - call-interactively 1623 70% - funcall-interactively 1580 68% - helm-bibtex 1077 46% - helm 1041 45% - apply 1041 45% - helm 1041 45% - apply 1041 45% - helm-internal 1041 45% - helm-read-from-minibuffer 1039 45% - read-from-minibuffer 961 41% If this is the case, how can I stop this from happening?

I heard helm wasn’t being maintained anymore like quite a long time ago. I use ivy personally and prefer it but there’s another new kid on the block now. Who the hell has time to keep switching right?

I still use Helm for some things like https://github.com/akirak/helm-linux-disks even though I use Consult + Vertico + Marginalia + Orderless + Embark. Helm has some packages and things I can't find outside of Helm. Helm can be slower though. Double-check that you're native-compiling helm.

Helm is still actively maintained. It has several commits as of four days ago: https://github.com/emacs-helm/helm/commits/master The author took a short break awhile ago, but it is one of the most thorough and frequently updated elisp packages.

I’m glad to hear this

How do I double-check that I am native-compiling? I use Emacs 27.2 (GNU Emacs 27.2 (build 1, x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 3.24.33, cairo version 1.17.4) of 2022-03-12) on Arch Linux (EndeauvourOS).

You'll need to get the Emacs 28.1 beta or the master branch.

Thanks, I'll wait till its released in binary on Arch. I have reinstalled all packages from scratch and removed the Emacs Application Framework, which could be the culprit. So far so good ...

> Thanks, I'll wait till its released in binary on Arch. Check AUR. There are multiple Emacs packages there, I am quite sure there is at least one with native compiler enabled. Or just compile yourself from the master. It is not worth waiting for the binary in official repo. You also have no guarantee it will come with native compiler enabled, since it is an optional feature. If you compile from the master, you don't even need the native compiler. I recently used master without native comp, and Helm works just as fast as I can type. There have been some optimizations in Emacs core lately, which you can currently get only if you use master branch. If you search on my nick in this reddit, you can find the thread I posted a few weeks ago about exactly those speedups.
