Elisp for Hire
nv-elisp · 2022-03-16 21:38
Need a package developed? Bug fix or feature for a package you use that nobody seems willing to tackle? One on one Elisp/Emacs lessons?
Send me a message! I have a fair amount of [elisp experience](https://github.com/progfolio?tab=repositories&q=&type=source&language=emacs+lisp&sort=stargazers). We may be able to help each other out.
Thanks,
Nick

It might be a worthwhile idea to generalise this sort of like the [Emacs Buddies](https://github.com/ag91/emacs-buddy) initiative.

Hourly?
nv-elisp · 2022-03-17 02:38
Depends on the nature of the project. If you have something specific in mind feel free to send me a message, and I'd be happy to figure out what works best for both of us.

You want contract assignments. Trust me, I've done a lot of freelance dev, and both sides want contract.
The process of drafting the contract naturally produces a clear spec, which is useful both technically and financially.
Hourly work is fucky because it disinsentives elegant solutions, and doesn't reward experienced developers for their insights.
This ain't an assembly line y'all 😁

I also offer one on one lessons, for which I find an hourly rate usually works best.
SickMoonDoe · 2022-03-17 07:59
This is a good way to price that type of work. Assignments are more suited to set costs though - honestly for the benefit of both parties.
I used an hourly rate "in my head" to estimate; something like `200/hr * ( ( expected hours ) * 1.5 inevitable unforseen hours )` which worked well - but a client never had any indication of what my "hourly rate" really was.

Hey Nick, **kudos to you** for all your contributions to the Emacs community!
I would be very interested in a few one on one sessions with you to move forward with Emacs as my daily driver and VS Code replacement. Ping me, so that we can arrange something.

How much would it take to get [Telega](https://github.com/zevlg/telega.el) to work with [Emacspeak](https://github.com/tvraman/emacspeak/)? I'd like Emacspeak to be able to read incomming chats while focused in that chat's buffer, get rid of the Ascii stuff around messages or if it's important, replace with description, Have keys that change position or sort speak the results of what they did afterwards, things like that.
nv-elisp · 2022-03-18 17:48
Hahahah, thank you. It was a fun project.
nv-elisp · 2022-03-18 17:57
I've never worked with Emacspeak, myself, but I imagine it would take a fair amount of effort. I was going to set up Telega and Emacspeak to do some experimentation, but I'm hesitant considering the following Telega issue:
https://github.com/zevlg/telega.el/issues/353
devinprater · 2022-03-18 18:10
Oh my, never saw that one before. Yeah, I wouldn't risk it. It's at least usable, moreso than the default Telegram app on Linux lol.

You got wrecked in the eglot vs. lsp_mode thread lol

Hmm, I am not sure what you are referring to from that thread. There were disagreements, sure.
Either way, an unusual thing to bring up?
hangingpawns · 2022-03-20 23:11
Your tone sucked.

Yes, he's an FSF simp. You're a simp. I'm a simp. The moderator who's
about to flag this convo is a simp.
But if we had to point this out every time, reddit would crash.

For that I apologize, it is just a topic I felt strongly (or as strongly as you can feel about an Emacs-related topic) about.
