How to build an editor with Emacs Lisp (Videos series)
lxsameer · 2022-03-14 20:01
Hey folks,
Hope you're doing great. I'm using Emacs for about 15 years (So basically a rookies in scale of Emacs :P). Based on my experience over the years and specially in the recent times, not many people know about the wonderful world of Emacs and why it is such a fascinating tool. To me they are missing out a chance to enjoy Emacs. So, a while ago I've decided to create a video series and talk about Emacs Lisp in context of a long running project to create an "editor" with Emacs Lisp, In hope to help more people to enjoy the tool that changed the way I use computers and brought me joy over all these years.
Yesterday, I recorded the 4th episode of the video series. I thought to myself that It might be a good idea to share it on this subreddit as well. I have a looooooong term plan for this series and looking forward to your feedback.

Am I misunderstanding this or are you using emacs lisp as an application development language to create an entirely new editor? Seems kind of a weird goal no offense
lxsameer · 2022-03-14 21:23
none taken :). No that's not the goal, basically the aim is to learn Emacs lisp first and then create an editor based on Emacs. Like usual. I kinda explained it in the first episode.

Ngl writing a different editor in emacs would be pretty cool
lxsameer · 2022-03-14 21:41
Indeed. Even though I'm not going to build a new one from scratch with elisp, I have plan to use elisp to build some cool stuff

I just left a job where I was in a more devops kind of role, but towards the end I was really starting to think about elisp as a general purpose scripting language and emacs as an engine to run pipelines. It seems like there’s a lot of potential there to just start writing non-emacs packages in elisp.

I feel you. I do this kinda stuff a lot. Recently for another project of mine (a compiler in c++) i tried doxygen and sphinx to generate the docs but didn't like it. I ended up using elisp and orgmode to generate the docs for that project and my website. simple and surprisingly rich

I mean, if you really wanted to you could load nano or vi in a terminal buffer.

This is really cool, subbed!

Thank you

Looks very promising, subscribed! Also, I think it is better to keep short videos (up to 20 mins), so it's easier to comprehend them and search for a specific topic

Thanks for the feedback. Every episode, I tell myself that this one will be a short one, yet it turns out to be long. :D
I'll do my best to keep them short

I use Emacs as a sort of a 'control layer', or 'common, comfortable UI' on top of various shell scripts and async external system processes. And there are a lot of other interfaces available as well, once you start learning some Elisp.
Some times I parse the output externally, and some times in an Emacs buffer. Or a little of both, depending.

A modal editor, maybe? Call it something short and pithy like , I dunno,`ei` :P
lxsameer · 2022-03-16 20:05
That is so cool
