My boss said use vs code it will give side tree and terminal. I did this for him.

DurableOne · 2022-03-11 22:53
That looks great! I sure hope you're not posting a screenshot of a production code base though...
DrPiwi · 2022-03-11 22:55
Nice, can you elaborate on what you have done?
spicybright · 2022-03-11 22:56
What do you mean "for him"? Is this going to be his setup or something?
TommyHeizer · 2022-03-11 23:22
Add a nice colorscheme and fancy modeline, use vterm as a terminal inside of emacs, use what I think is Treemacs to make it do the same as vscode
naokotani · 2022-03-11 23:23
I have the side tree set up, but I rarely open it. If I need to navigate the file structure visually, I prefer to just open dired.
spudlyo · 2022-03-11 23:37
I've really wanted to post impressive screenshots of Emacs / Projectile / LSP totally handling our massive production monorepo & mixed language codebase, but... I want to remain employed.
DurableOne · 2022-03-11 23:39
I remember coming across a video demonstrating selective blurring of (Org?) buffers for similar purposes, but I wouldn't be able to find it now.
jmhimara · 2022-03-11 23:43
VS code is pretty nice though. I find myself using it more and more lately. Not as extensible as emacs, maybe, but still pretty extensible, easier to use, and with saner defaults. And pretty fast. Emacs begins to slow down after you've added enough packages to it.
ameuret · 2022-03-11 23:49
Add « All The Icons » to the mix and he’ll switch. https://github.com/domtronn/all-the-icons.el
flexibeast · 2022-03-11 23:51
Interesting. i have over 230 packages installed, and haven't noticed any slowdown. Perhaps the issue isn't the number of packages, but the specific packages installed?
char1zard4 · 2022-03-11 23:59
Same, I used to use the directory tree a ton in VS Code, so I installed and set up neotree with the nice icon package, mostly use dired instead
jmhimara · 2022-03-12 00:04
Could be.
babuloseo · 2022-03-12 00:49
I would start applying for more jobs if I were you.
tms9918 · 2022-03-12 01:20
What theme are you using?
jcarloz · 2022-03-12 01:23
Vscode gets slower than emacs once you add all the vscode extensions that do similar things to the emacs packages
karthink · 2022-03-12 01:56
I've always found `dired-jump` to be faster and more convenient than a side tree.
zoglesby · 2022-03-12 02:06
I just spent the week using vs code at work because 99% of the people do. I don’t get why and will be going back to Emacs on Monday.
MohKohn · 2022-03-12 02:28
See, if there were any guarantee it wasn't going to evaporate like sublime or atom I'd be more keen on it
jmhimara · 2022-03-12 02:35
There's never a guarantee, but it is open source and very popular, so that's something.

Having more than two windows/buffers made it a pain to switch around for me. Is there a way to set it up so the configuration is always the same (same buffer in same position) and jump around with some fixed numbers rather than using the `other-window` command?
bagtowneast · 2022-03-12 02:48
Don't worry. Nobody wants to steal code with a bunch of globals in it :-P
Auslegung · 2022-03-12 03:18
I've been using Doom Emacs for a while and really like it. Have you considered using it or something similar?
TheSnowIsCold-46 · 2022-03-12 03:20
This brings me much joy
doomchild · 2022-03-12 04:10
My only real frustration is that it seems like `lsp-mode` gets ridiculously slow sometimes, and I can't figure out what configuration is causing it.
curtsable · 2022-03-12 04:23
Ace-window is great for jumping to specific buffers! It assigns them all a number that you can use to just to each one.
ExistingProgram3883 · 2022-03-12 04:56
Cool. I'm using a similar setup. However, I did not fix the terminal. Would you mind to post the Eliseo snippet regarding terminal placement?
flexibeast · 2022-03-12 05:45
Oh okay - have you tried eglot? i'd be interested to know if that's better or worse in your use-case.
doomchild · 2022-03-12 05:45
I haven't. I've seen it mentioned, but I don't know anything about it yet.
jigarthanda-paal · 2022-03-12 05:55
M-x rot13-region ? But that's easily decipherable. Hm... I think this calls for an emacs lisp function/package that does a 1-way encryption similar to rot13-region. Might be able to hack it up over the weekend
grewil · 2022-03-12 06:25
Some companies do develop open source code though.
justinabrahms · 2022-03-12 07:07
Probably https://github.com/bkaestner/redacted.el or similar
ebriose · 2022-03-12 07:09
Same. I've gone through phases where I use windows to basically give myself an IDE but I always wind up realizing keyboard-based navigation is faster.
pathemata · 2022-03-12 07:55
I open dired on a side bar with `dired-sidebar`.
eternal_cachero · 2022-03-12 08:50
Pls tell me your secrets of how to handle massive monorepos.
r0flcopt3r · 2022-03-12 08:54
Emacs struggles with our massive monorepo. Please tell me you secrets. Recently swapped to eglot, which improved performance a lot. Rewrote find-file to simply call fd from a shell, which made listing the files go from 1 minute to 2 seconds... Other than that, on a M1 Mac with Doom Emacs 29.
r0flcopt3r · 2022-03-12 09:07
I don't understand the UX at all in vscode. I always have to rely on the mouse, which is extra annoying with ergonomic keyboards. I hate a buffer/tab is bound to a window/editor-group. I also really hate the completely insanely non-mnemonic the keybinds are. I want Emacs keybinds /and/ vim emulation. Which should just work because on macos I have system level Emacs keybinds, but vscode ignores it?! I dunno, getting started with vscode is a multi week process of tweaking configs to make to somewhat usable, also making a new firmware for my keyboard. Way to costly for me. I really want it's super stable remote editing setup, and the non-standard default lsp configurations it has, which makes even the strangest projects somehow magically work.
ghostinthekernel · 2022-03-12 10:48
you are probably loading unnecessary directories, there is a variable that contains your projects roots, if you by mistake added your home dir or something like that it will def slow things down.

Yet another package I didn't know about. Looks cool, but a lot of my issue is that I'm allergic to clutter with my t430's tiny 1366x720 screen.
thblt · 2022-03-12 11:32
> Hm… I think this calls for an emacs lisp function/package that does a 1-way encryption similar to rot13-region. Might be able to hack it up over the weekend I’m pretty sure some of the `zone` effects do exactly that. Not encryption as much as arbitrary substitution, of course (but that’s technically encryption with a random algorithm :-)
drpantzo · 2022-03-12 13:00
What Emacs packages do you use to work w Python?
rakashraj · 2022-03-12 15:47
thanks.
rakashraj · 2022-03-12 15:47
neotree
by_wicker · 2022-03-12 15:48
Yeah, I pop it up when I'm exploring some new project, or when I'm literally contemplating the structure itself - like arranging or re-arranging files. Other than that it's just a mass of screen space that most of the time is of zero interest. Anything on screen should be something I'm actively looking at. Something I occasionally want to see should be summoned easily but hidden. I open files and buffers and projects with fuzzy matching in a couple of keystrokes, not hierarchy, and certainly not by picking up a mouse and using hand-eye coordination to select one.
rakashraj · 2022-03-12 15:48
company-jedi and company
doomchild · 2022-03-12 16:14
That's the one thing I've made sure isn't happening, funnily enough. I do have a LOT of projects in my `~/code` directory, but I'm pretty sure I'm not loading all of them at once.
kingpatzer · 2022-03-12 16:36
The thing is -- as a "cunt boss" who has used Emacs since the early 80s and still uses it daily for a number of things, within teams industrialized solutions have many advantages. If everyone is using the same tool sets configured more or less the same way -- then when someone in Manilla is asking "how do I do <x>" then they can be given a step by step procedure by anyone on the team -- from someone in India, or Netherlands, or NYC -- without any other questions beyond what it is they want to achieve. Bespoke solutions are awesome for personal use. They are great for small shops where everyone is in the same room. They are shit for global teams where having standardized tooling matters. And, the sad reality is, the days of me being able to ask my teams "VI or Emacs, pick one" and having that be the only choice anyone cared about are long, long, LONG gone. Indeed, the last time I started a large project and polled for editor preference (late 2020), neither VI nor Emacs was even mentioned as a top-3 choice by ANYONE on the team. And we're talking a team of over 200 people. So, no, it's not about being a cunt. It's about how to set up a system within which a large team can be effective and efficient. Which means that your personal preferences (as will my own) will take a back seat to team dynamics. And, btw, if you can't understand that, that lack of understanding will stop you from ever being an effective cunt boss yourself.
jigarthanda-paal · 2022-03-12 16:54
What do you mean by `zone` effects?
[deleted] · 2022-03-12 17:35
Somebody probably cares. Not me, but someone ..probably.
jsled · 2022-03-12 18:09
This has been removed, as it is not very civil; please attack ideas, not people.
[deleted] · 2022-03-12 18:13
So sorry. I will try to be more civil in future.

Didn't you say [you were a boss yourself](https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/sviw6n/comment/hxiipai/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)? I guess we should be relieved you're not hiring?

I forget the exact command name, but maybe it's M-x zone. It has zone in the name at any rate. It's built-in and is a screensaver of sorts.
speckledlemon · 2022-03-12 22:38
I can’t speak to Sublime, but IMO the only reason Atom “evaporated” is because Microsoft bought GitHub, and VSC was already reasonably popular at that point. Probably no one is going to buy Microsoft, they don’t just lose interest in projects (Google), and it’s the premier platform for “their” language (TypeScript). Obviously it’a riskier than staying with Emacs, but the safest bet for an alternative.
cradlemann · 2022-03-14 09:55
`editorconfig` is available to any editor or IDE.I have 0 problems working with Emacs in a team, most of my teammates use vim or vscode or Goland
thblt · 2022-03-14 14:58
It’s exactly that. Some sort of screen saver.
MistakeNotDotDotDot · 2022-03-16 04:24
The redacted text looks so pretty.
SnooPets20 · 2022-08-07 23:24
Oof yeah, just realized. `global` on production code, yuk.
