Been using this to find files system wide, mostly random org file notes on things but it's great. Just wondering what everyone else is doing for a fuzzy file search, like ctrl-p in vim? The cool thing about this is you can select the folder before the search which means it's not going to just crawl your entire user folder etc.
Anyway what's everyone else's approach to this?

You probably want one of the fzf integrations.
E.g.:

Also consider the command `locate`, which uses the program `locate`. That program is pre-installed on many Linux systems. It keeps a record of existing files, so that you do not need to go searching manually through directories each time.
The package Consult has `consult-locate`, which is `locate` using `completing-read`.

That does seem mighty superior. It’s kinda nice having a built in feature as well though

from ivy -> counsel-locate counsel-file-jump or counsel-fzf might all be suitable

The closest thing you're looking for is [affe](https://github.com/minad/affe) it just uses completing-read in an async manner. The filtering is also done async so there is no lag. It supports emacs' completion styles, e.g. you can couple it with [orderless](https://github.com/oantolin/orderless).
You can also use [consult](https://github.com/minad/consult) directly, which is a dependency of affe that comes with consult-ripgrep and consult-find commands. The behaviour here is slightly different as the filtering is not done async.
Fzf and friends are okay to use in emacs but not very emacsy.
There are also alternatives like counsel, but in my experience they're much slower than affe and consult
