Need help listing all "Emacs super developers."
awannaphasch2016 · 2022-03-08 21:00
I started to mature as a emacs users, so now I am trying to start developing things.
I notice that I encounter familiar name often. Once that comes to mind right now is /u/github-alphapapa and I also encounter this repo from /u/akirakom ([https://github.com/akirak](https://github.com/akirak)).
After looking into those repo, I figured out that these guys have solved problem that I had, am having, and don't even know that I have.
So I am now trying to gather all repos from these "emacs super developers", so I can study their code, understand problem that bother them, understand how they solve problem and one day be good enough to continuously contribute to the community.
Thank you in advance.

A few more that spring to mind are
https://github.com/minad
https://karthinks.com/tags/emacs/ (https://github.com/karthink)
https://github.com/oantolin
https://github.com/hlissner (Basically, check out the Doom Emacs codebase)
....
A lot more come to my mind now too. There's really a lot of awesome Elisp developers and even years in, I still feel like a baby Emacs-wise.

Here's a rough package to figure out who the top 10 most published authors on MELPA are:
https://gist.github.com/progfolio/44c00a0242f87e6db58e66eba032746d
Far from perfect, but the current results are:
;; (author . published-packages)
((xuchunyang . 54)
(purcell . 50)
(jcs-elpa . 40)
(syohex . 36)
(alphapapa . 34)
(abo-abo . 33)
(rolandwalker . 31)
(conao3 . 26)
(aki2o . 26)
(ideasman42 . 25))
In general, my advice would be to read and experiment with as much elisp source code as you can (I hear Emacs ships with quite a bit).
Worry less about the author's reputation and more about the substance of the programs.

>xuchunyang
very cool!. thanks!

some of them may also buddy you if you ask :D https://github.com/ag91/emacs-buddy
awannaphasch2016 · 2022-03-09 00:24
you have emacs buddy group chat? like emacs buddy's discord?
awannaphasch2016 · 2022-03-09 00:36
I sent mail to you.

I would include tarsius, the maintainer of magit, and skeeto in the top list. I agree with you that both alphapapa and minad are especially great as well.
Note that some of my code are hacky and probably not worth studying. Thanks for referring to me, but now I feel I could have done better.

There's also [Henrik Lissner](https://github.com/hlissner), the creator of Doom Emacs. There are lots of talented Elispers in this community. They also have a Discord where you can interact with the active members about programming and elisp.
Otherwise, every big Emacs project should have some great elisp code, I have in mind [LSP-Mode](https://github.com/emacs-lsp/lsp-mode), [Magit](https://github.com/magit/magit) and such.

- Daniel Mendler /u/minad -- https://github.com/minad/ -- vertico, consult, ...
- tarsius -- https://github.com/magit/magit
- Xah Lee -- http://xahlee.info/emacs/ huge ass Emacs tutorial, lots of code snippets, and `xah-fly-keys` ergo modal input
- Nicolas Rougier -- https://github.com/rougier/ -- beauteous Emacs stuff

Isn't that always the case when we notice that the light of other people's attention shines onto the mess we made? :)

This thread is unfortunately bound to leave out some very skilled developers. However, many of them reside at https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/
Someone I'm not sure posts on emacs devel but is still very active is yyoncho, for LSP and DAP,
AndreaSomePostfix · 2022-03-09 16:35
not really because the idea is to facilitate you getting in touch with somebody who can follow you. Reddit or Emacs' mailing lists are good enough for broadcast async messages

Good point. One can stuck at the same level of expertise for long, so the number of packages may not be a precise indicator of skills.

Names I haven't seen listed here yet:
- [John Wiegly](https://github.com/jwiegley ), Emacs maintainer, and developer of `use-package` and a few others.
- [Sacha Chua](https://sachachua.com/blog/ ) Emacs hacker, but more of a communitarian lately since she has to take care of her kids now. She publishes an Emacs newsletter and organizes conferences.
- [Bastien Guerry](https://bzg.fr/en/how-to-help-gnu-emacs-maintainers/ ), current maintainer of Org-Mode did a talk recently on how to help Emacs maintainers.
- Andrea Corallo, Luca Nassi, Nicola Manca are the guys behind [GCC Emacs](https://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/GccEmacs ), a project using `libgcc` for compiling Emacs Lisp to native code for improved performance.
There are many others of course, but these are who came to my mind in the few moments it took me to write this.
