Hi everyone! The package [Dirvish](https://github.com/alexluigit/dirvish) has reached its v1.0.0 release, please try it out if you're interested. I'm looking forward for feedback from you guys! Best regards, Alex

I recommend keeping the visual presentation simpler for a demo video/gif. The alpha bg + pic make this much harder to look at it and glean any detail than just using a simple theme with no transparency.

Damn this looks awesome dude, will be trying it. I have been unwilling to try emacs file managers such as ranger-mode in the past as I like how dired works, but if this is based on dired it might work better for me.

Thanks for your nice suggestion. I didn't change the background or the alpha-background here just because I feel it looks ok on my machine, but obviously I overlook the video compression. My bad, sorry mate. Edit: For those who find it hard to grasp the video due to the background, please allow me to illustrate a bit on what I want to convey in this video (I didn't find a way to edit the original post). This first part of the video (0:00 - 0:30) demonstrates 3 commands: * `dirvish-dired`: (0:03 - 0:09) a improved Dired * `dirvish-toggle-fullscreen`: (0:10 and 0:25) maximize/restore a Dirvish session for ranger-like multi-column+preview layout. * `dirvish-goto-bookmark`: (0:13) a transient-based bookmark menu to help you navigate to frequently visited locations in a single keystroke. (an optional feature) The second part (0:31 - end) shows similar things but by using the `fd-dired` package (search for a word in a project). The purpose of this part is to show that: 1. you can even have file preview for the result from `find/fd-dired`. 2. Dirvish is able to adapt its UI towards different file managing tasks. You might also notice I did a lot of marking operations in the video, that was to prove these buffers were not killed as long as the session is live, this is a difference between Dired and Dirvish. See [FAQ](https://github.com/alexluigit/dirvish) in README. Sorry for the presentation, I'll definitely improve this next time.

Thank you! >I have been unwilling to try emacs file managers such as ranger-mode in the past as I like how dired works Here is a brief [summary](https://github.com/alexluigit/dirvish/issues/10) on why you would choose dirvish over ranger.el. This [section](https://github.com/alexluigit/dirvish#how-is-dirvish-related-to-dired) in the Readme might also be helpful. I'm also a fan of dired, that's why I want to give it the ability to adapt itself to various file managing/browsing tasks.
AuroraDraco · 2022-03-07 18:47
Yeah, I read the README, this does seem like something I would use tbh
noman_032018 · 2022-03-07 20:23
Huh, `dired` meets `ranger`? Neat.

Your second link 404s, fyi
alexluigit · 2022-03-08 02:50
Weird, it opens for me correctly. Anyways the title that link pointed to is "How is Dirvish related to Dired?" in the README, which is the first item in FAQ section.
alexluigit · 2022-03-08 04:04
Thank you, Dirvish is not trying to be a ranger clone like ranger.el does although it learned a lot from ranger, it's built for Emacs users.

The UI looks great but my rather ageing brain can't keep up with pace of the video. I'll definitely give it a try though and play with it at my own geriatric pace :) Well done OP, awesome looking file manager.

This looks great! Gonna try it out tomorrow. Question: can dirvish-sidebar be a potential replacement for treemacs?
alexluigit · 2022-03-08 13:51
Thank you! Hope you like it! I feel really sorry for the bad demo video, could have done better. I'll come up with a better demo next time, maybe a youtube video.
alexluigit · 2022-03-08 14:53
Thanks for your kind words! >can dirvish-side be a potential replacement for treemacs? It really depends. If you are a treemacs user already and rely on a lot of treemacs features that dired/project.el failed to provide, then I won't recommend you to switch, because at least for now, `dirvish-side` is relatively primitive compare to treemacs. But if you prefer lightweight solutions like I do, just want a toggleable file explorer at side, you should definitely try `dirvish-side`,besides this is leveraging dired, how bad can it be?
github-alphapapa · 2022-03-08 18:42
This looks neat, I'll have to try it sometime. As usual with this sort of package, I'd encourage you to consider upstreaming as many features as you can into Dired itself. :)
alexluigit · 2022-03-09 07:52
Thank you! >I'd encourage you to consider upstreaming as many features as you can into Dired itself I'd love to but I have no idea on how to do it, can you give me some basic guidance on contributing to Emacs upstream? Forgive my silly question, I just don't know where to start.

There are many discussions about this on this subreddit, see https://old.reddit.com/r/emacs/search?q=how+contribute&restrict_sr=on. As well, see the emacs-devel mailing list.

Thanks for the information, I'll check them out and see what I can do.

very nice job I will be using this for quick edits this week at work for sure. Its nice to pop it full screen when navigating a directory for a project you don't use frequently.
alexluigit · 2022-03-21 08:32
Absolutely! It's also useful when you are working on a project with image/svg assets, just `dirvish-toggle-fullscreen` to preview them.
