List How Emacs And Elisp Performance Can be Improved ?

Bright_Confidence769 · 2022-03-04 18:16
And Well one more question is emacs multi threaded yet?
fragglestickcar0 · 2022-03-04 18:57
People who ask that question don't understand the entire codebase would need to change top to bottom. If Larry Hastings hasn't yet done it for Python, a language directly and indirectly sponsored by corporations, Emacs overachieves by doing nothing.
Bright_Confidence769 · 2022-03-04 18:58
what do you mean? do you want to say emacs have to be build again from scratch?
R3tr0_Gam3r · 2022-03-04 19:09
Not just "built again" (meaning re-compiled), but yes, a good part of it would have to be re-designed.
wargxs · 2022-03-04 19:52
If you use emacs 28 elisp can be compiled to native code which results in very significant speed-ups

How can the Multiverse(s) be improved?
nv-elisp · 2022-03-04 21:06
There's room for improvement in the garbage collector.
ubnnp · 2022-03-04 21:12
Have no idea if this is a viable approach, but there’s projects like [emacs-ng](https://github.com/emacs-ng/emacs-ng) trying to tackle this among other things.

> List How Emacs And Elisp Performance Can be Improved ? where do you have a performance bottleneck?
7890yuiop · 2022-03-05 00:32
1. Isolate a slow thing 2. Make the slow thing more efficient 3. Profit
Bright_Confidence769 · 2022-03-05 02:06
no i read somewhere emacs is single threaded and elsip is also very slow probably due to its very old thats why i wanted to throttle the performnace by multithreading and some parallels and some tweaks to imrpove its raw power
fragglestickcar0 · 2022-03-05 02:51
I can tell you personally lack the skill and leisure time to improve emacs, much less rewrite everything to be thread-safe. So naturally the question becomes, can you pay or raise the funds for someone who does?
7890yuiop · 2022-03-05 03:43
Let us know how you get on.
fragglestickcar0 · 2022-03-05 03:59
\> 3. Profit Please keep posts relevant to emacs.
Bright_Confidence769 · 2022-03-05 05:08
well yes i lack the skills but skills are like video games they can be improved

In this repo [garbage collection](https://github.com/farlado/dotemacs#garbage-collection-setup) there are sections about garbage collection (this one and a bit below about "no garbage collection when in Minibuffer). Maybe it helps you improve potential performance issues.
Kaligule · 2022-03-05 09:48
Most of my dayjob takes place in emacs, profit is not a wrong word here.
Bright_Confidence769 · 2022-03-05 10:25
well i was asking because people in this reddit may be using emacs for years whereas i installed it two days ago so their feedback or opinion on using it for so long matters if they speicfy if it was slow suggesting some more features so i can save time and have a map back of my mind that so when improving emacs i can make emacs from scratch for fun obviuosly but i guess people like you understood i was complaining about its performance but i was asking what is that thing which can be improved a lot in emacs not just performace of speed but also ui storage size etc
fragglestickcar0 · 2022-03-05 14:20
>probably old sitting on a chair all day Ngl, that sums it up. I was at one point quite the world traveler, then with the maturation of the internet, realized everything I wanted to spend time on was on a screen.
shintak · 2022-03-05 15:43
This. I really want a generational GC in emacs. I'm using ddskk(japanese input system) package which loads dictionary inside emacs, and the GC lag is noticable.
nv-elisp · 2022-03-05 15:59
It's not that I'm experiencing any performance issues. They asked which parts of Emacs could be improved. The garbage collector is one such area.
fragglestickcar0 · 2022-03-05 16:26
>Wish in one hand. Sh_t in the other. See which one fills up first. (Bad Santa) Hack temacs (the bootstrapped emacs) to load ddskk so that it gets pure-dumped. Problem solved.
arthurno1 · 2022-03-06 16:15
If you have being using Emacs for two days only, there are probably much better things to care about, then to theory craft about parallelism. As the commenter above told you, Emacs is quite fast for the interactive tasks it is designed for. Parallelizing and asynchronously executing interactive applications is anything but trivial, as we have experienced from Node and JavaScript in general.
arthurno1 · 2022-03-06 16:20
Can there be multiple Multiverse? Aren't all universes together, creating a Multiverse?
00-11 · 2022-03-06 16:57
42. Or maybe [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiverse).
arthurno1 · 2022-03-06 17:52
Interesting number. But if anything that can happen, happens, infinitely many times, then there must be infinitely many universes programmed in Emacs Lisp?
ideasman_42 · 2022-03-07 03:37
These kinds of posts - while valid questions, have been asked quite a few times. You can assume: - If it was simple/trivial it would probably have been done. - The reason it's not so simple is probably quite involved and not something that fit's into a brief answer on reddit. Also, since you don't give any details on what performance where... it's impractical to attempt to answer your question. In some isolated case it may indeed be possible to use multi-threading to optimize performance - but you would need to specify that case and it would need to be investigated which takes time. So, when you ask very broad questions like this - you tend not to get such useful answers. ---- Note that newer releases of emacs (28 & 29) are improving performance, so ... it may be that simply upgrading to the latest emacs (when it's released) resolves performance issues your running into.

This has been removed, as it is not very civil; please attack ideas, not people.
Bright_Confidence769 · 2022-11-06 09:36
Sorry bro Attack people not ideas People and ideas cannot be separated
jsled · 2022-11-06 11:48
It's actually easy to say "that's wrong and a bad idea" and not say "…so you must be an idiot dumbass". If you're going to participate here, you'd expected to be basically civil when talking to others.
