From Joplin to Org-mode

JohnAntoineG · 2022-03-03 10:37
I'm considering transitioning from Joplin to something else because of Joplin's use of a database to manage note, which I think is bloated and unnecessary. However, there are some things that I'm still not sure about when it comes to Org-mode. * Is there support for embedded images? (like markdown's `![]()` image links) * Is there a reliable way to view/edit Org files on android? Viewing should be rendered, with embedded images, not as plain text.

Yep, you definitely can have inline images! (Though I usually leave them off and toggle them on and off when needed). And for Android editing, check out the Orgzly app. If you save your org directory to a Dropbox folder, it can seamlessly sync between Android and your Desktop.

Yeah I'm already handling sync through syncthing, it's flawless to be honest. I'll check out orgzly, thank you!

I made that jump many many years ago. If you are only coming for the note-taking, you should have some time set aside for learning emacs. If you also plan to use it for other stuff (mainly programming), the transition will be a bit quicker as you cannot do any productive programming with emacs without at least spending a couple of days exploring it.

Not at all, I'm only new to org-mode, not emacs. I've been using doom emacs for software development for over a year now to the point that I'm practically living in emacs at this point. It's just that I jumped head first into development on emacs, configuring lsp servers and stuff, so i didn't have time to explore the productivity side of emacs

I learned decided to try Org-mode in emacs as well instead of joplin and obsidian etc. I decided on Doom Emacs and a few tutorials on org-roam as well. Oh, and I decided on Evil-mode for keybindings. iirc, Doom emacs has automatic inline images (with tab to show them or not), so that makes for very smooth document editing imho. Whenever i need to make a small script (like python etc), i now prefer to do it in Emacs as well. I really like this editor.

It's good to know about the image support. Emacs became my main editor and dev environment over the last year, it's really great. The only thing left to try is android viewing / editing

HAH. Then you'll find setting up org-mode a cinch, no issues there. While the Joplin feature mapping is not 1:1, I think the feature set in org-mode is infinitely richer. In typical emacs style, it is extremely configurable and you should be able to achieve any workflow you are after. I'd also advise looking at other packages which enhance the org-mode experience like org-agenda, org-roam and such.
JohnAntoineG · 2022-03-03 16:34
My only concern is android mobile viewing at this point, if that's a 1:1 with emacs then the whole idea is a go

It is not. For instance the \[/\] cookies do not auto-update etc. But I think it would be quite difficult to clone org-mode functionality into an editor/reader that is not emacs. I only use orgzly to sync my grocery list :D I am sure there are people here who use it much more seriously though.

Well, I'll have to try it for myself this weekend then. Thank you for your help!

Check Logseq. Currently Im using both logseq and org-mode (org-roam) together but slowly migrating to use logseq only.
paretoOptimalDev · 2022-03-03 22:20
Do note users are reporting data loss in /r/logseq though, frequently seems related to syncing. Maybe it's not logseq specifically, but the potential it is has scared me off a bit.

Why are you moving towards logseq only?
Vagrian · 2022-03-03 23:26
Logseq has all the features I ever needed. I really like that I can embed videos/pictures easly, embed blocks from other pages, add drawing board... I love how Journal page works out of box I can finally truly use it as my inbox page +diary+health tracker etc what I couldnt achieve on org-roam. Also plugin system gives me all the freedom I need since Im very comfortable with javascript while elisp was giving me headache With this tool I actually get work done without spending 2 hours on fiddling with config before marking some task done 😅
Vagrian · 2022-03-03 23:32
I havent experienced data loss myself but its totaly possible. Logseq is new and under heavy development so bugs happen.
JohnAntoineG · 2022-03-03 23:33
After some research, I would rather handle synchronization myself than leave it to the host application. Besides having a bloated database, Joplin had another major shortcoming which is note sync. Always missing updates, long sync times, frequent cache pulls/updates, among other things. On the other hand, I'm syncing a million different things between 5 devices ranging from desktops all the way to phones and even raspberrypi's with syncthing without even a hiccup. that's why I insist on handling backup/sync myself. And I want a solution that simply deals with plain text, no database of any kind, even a relatively simple one like logseq's but thank you for the suggestion
Vagrian · 2022-03-03 23:52
Logseq files you deal syncing yourself. At first I droped my folder into dropbox to sync across devices but now I setup syncthing. Logseq will have pro version and will offer their cloud storage for people who do not wish to handle sync by themselfs. This tool saves everything inside simple .md or .org text files. The only database in plans is just by storing some metadata to speed up loading huge amounts of notes. I suggest you try both org-mode and logseq. Logseq reads org files so you dont need to have separate notes, just point both tools into same folder
JohnAntoineG · 2022-03-05 13:32
I'll test that then. Thank you for the info.
deescuderoo · 2022-06-09 16:41
Hey I'm interested to hear about your experience so far... I used to use org-mode for all my project management and note-taking, but switched to Joplin momentarily as I appreciated a more "visual" information (I liked the way md files rendered). However, like you, I started disliking the database approach and the lack of control over files, so I came back to org again. I miss a more visual interaction with my notes, but I'd like to keep using org files... did you find a solution for this? Thanks!
JohnAntoineG · 2022-06-09 17:04
Unfortunately, I stuck with joplin for the time being because of not having enough time to tackle the issue. However, I think I found a suitable workflow. I already heavily rely on syncthing to sync, well, everything. So the syncing part will be handled independently. For editing/viewing on Android, I think Orgzly is perfect for the task. My only issue is that, based on my limited research, I expect to have trouble with images. (feel free to correct me if I am wrong) Other than that, I'm planning to totally migrate to a 100% org-mode workflow soon. However, I imagine that the fancier stuff that you might do with MD (math notation,... Etc) might not translate very well to org-mode. I'm not very invested in the more nuanced MD workflow though. For things that need actual typesetting I use LaTeX. If you decide to take the plunge before I do, please post your findings here so we can all build on each other's experience.
