Think that the screenshot shows it all.
I am using Doom. Here is the [config](https://github.com/prostoiChelovek/dotfiles/tree/master/.doom.d).

Maybe try a latex compiler other than xelatex?
prostoiChelovek · 2022-03-01 17:11
does not seem to change anything
i've tried both `pdflatex` and `lualatex` for the `org-latex-compiler` variable

Org previews are generated by running latex with the parameters in `org-preview-latex-default-process` and `org-preview-latex-process-alist`, not `org-latex-compiler`. You could check there.
See also [org-auctex](https://github.com/karthink/org-auctex).

Use `#+LATEX_HEADER_EXTRA` instead of `#+LATEX_HEADER`, empty your `/ltximg` directory and recreate the images.

it worked, thank you kind stranger!
I did not have a `ltximg` directory, but instead I had to delete the contents of `~/.emacs.d/.local/cache/org-latex/`
tbh it didn't occur to me that I needed to clean up the cache for changes to have an effect lol

You must have a directory where the images are stored. It is the value of `org-preview-latex-image-directory`. Usually, it is a relative path but it makes sense to define an absolute path for it.
