> I don't really know what I would put in there. Any libraries that you add to your config which weren't installed as ELPA packages would go there.

Oh shoot. Pastebin sucks now. Ok I updated my post with a working link, thanks!

Can you give me an example? I'm not sure what ELPA really means, or how I would find packages that are non-ELPA.
7890yuiop · 2022-02-24 02:36
ELPA = Emacs Lisp Package Archive. Anything you install as a "package" tends to come from such an archive (GNU ELPA and MELPA are two examples). The concept of emacs lisp "packages" has been around for only ~10 years (at least so far as `package.el` being included as standard in Emacs goes). GNU Emacs is the better part of 40 years old OTOH, so obviously "packages" are merely the new(ish) kid on the block when it comes to adding libraries to your Emacs config. We're just talking about *.el and *.elc files, which you might find anywhere on the internet. Any such file could be put into your lisp directory and you could then `require` it in your config (thanks to your `load-path`). Maybe you'll never do that, but it doesn't hurt to have it set up.
Status-Detective-783 · 2022-02-24 02:41
Thanks! What would be an example of a non-ELPA package? Also, how would it "know" to be installed in ~/.emacs.d/lisp/? My load-path has a lot of dirs in it. Would I be installing these non-ELPA packages? Through `M-x list-packages` and setting some config to point to that dir? Or would I just be manually installing them in that dir?

`load-path` tells Emacs where it can find elisp libraries. `package-install` adds each package directory to `load-path` so that Emacs can find and load that package. "Installing" an elisp file without using `package-install` is nothing more than putting the file into a directory which is in your `load-path`. (In your case you've added a `lisp` directory to your `load-path` for this purpose, so you'd most likely use that directory; but *any* directory in the list would work.) As for examples, here's 38,211 github repositories containing elisp files: https://github.com/search?q=language%3Aelisp (and for no other reason than that the name made me laugh, https://raw.githubusercontent.com/NickSeagull/coconut-mode/master/coconut-mode.el is an example of one of those elisp files). You can find loads by browsing the Emacs Wiki as well. https://www.emacswiki.org/

Ok, thanks again!

It is very unfortunate to know that coconut-mode has nothing to do with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0AOGeqOnFY

I see that you have deleted this entire thread, which means that no one in future with the same questions gets to benefit from the time that people spent responding. I think that denying others the same help you were given is unsociable behaviour so *personally* I won't look at any other questions of yours, but I hope you reconsider this approach.

Some guys just like to see their own posts on the internet, regardless of their lack of novelty. I do, you obviously do, and OP does. That OP deleted himself and his easily googled inquiry reduces clutter if anything.

#NOTE ABOUT DELETING THIS POST. /u/7890yuiop is right about not deleting posts. Unfortunately, I couldn't tell him/her this because I think (?) he blocked me? (When i attempt to reply, I get "Something is broken, please try again later" which other posts suggests indicates a block? And reddit's implementation of block means I cannot even reply to other people (/u/fragglestickcar0) in that thread? If that's so, that's insanely ridiculous.) This is what I was going to respond, so might as well make a record of it. I apologize this happened, but it was a reasoned action. You're right about making posts to this sub a long lived archive of useful q/a. The problem with *this* post was that it was a messy question (please read my entire init.el to debug this issue lolz), nobody actually answered my issue. I took about 10 hours of research on this, moved a bunch of stuff around, and at one point... it just started working again! In fact, the reason I deleted this post was because I really thought it would be better for future readers to NOT read it because it was a messy rabbit hole and they would be mostly wasting their time. I rarely delete like this. I do, in fact want my Q/A's to be well written to help others, and I form both questions and replies in accordance with that. See for example [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/t049oc/when_i_use_dired_and_move_to_another_directory_i/hy9ts1e/), and [this (which is similar to what you're saying)](https://www.reddit.com/r/planetemacs/comments/szwkb2/andrea_would_you_like_an_emacs_buddy_i_can_help/hy6hxet/). Also, see for example the edit I made at the top of [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/sz1z9o/headline_is_showing_up_in_my_agenda_what_am_i/) so future readers don't have to read through the entire post to find the solution.

Bruh, no one (modulo a butt-hurt milquetoast) cares whether you delete your own threads. Your immortal words remain safe with Steve Huffman and the NSA. I don't need to tell you that if something's useful or important enough, it'll be repeated soon enough.
Status-Detective-783 · 2022-02-25 21:32
lol. It got to me for some reason, and I've been on the Internet forever, so I'm not easily "got to". Perhaps not only because I'm active on places like stack-exchange and take care in making my q/a's useful for others, but it was the first time I experienced the new sniper feature that reddit has implemented, allowing someone to take a shot at someone and then block them, thus blocking them from responding. Ok well thanks for that funny reply, and have a nice day!
