The way I did it was I highlighted the tree, then M-x org-html-export-to-html, then used (macbook) finder to open that file. That opened a new Chrome tab, and I copy-pasted from there to my gmail. I was just wondering if there was an easier/better way.

I do this all the time for email, slack and confluence exchange: org-export, narrow to subtree, html, open in firefox, copy, paste into destination.
Simple html is the modern rich interchange format.
(For email I use org-mime to compose with org syntax directly in my responses, and get a multipart/alternative html version just before sending.)

[Here's a thread](https://emacs.stackexchange.com/questions/54292/copy-results-of-org-export-directly-to-clipboard) on exporting org to your clipboard, you may have to do some monkeying around depending on your operating system etc.
Also, if you set up a [mail manager in emacs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZRyEhi4y44), you could streamline the process further, but it may not be your taste.

org can export html to a buffer

Thanks! How would I copy/paste that to Gmail? Is the exported html rendered in the buffer?
