Newbie, ido-mode. Sometimes I just want to create a new file in the current directory. But ido mode will find a corresponding file in some wildly different directory, perhaps multiple levels up or something. How to stop this?

I know I can type C-x f C-f, and perhaps the most sensible thing to do when creating a new file. But I was wondering what was going on with this behavior. EDIT: Any suggestions for an ido-mode alternative (especially one that you're happy with) would be appreciated!

Idk what you're using `ido-mode` for. I too was annoyed with this behaviour. I use `ido-switch-buffer` with `ido-mode` disabled. So if you can do the same there's your fix. Otherwise check this [older post](https://old.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/ldrtsw/idomode_autocompletes_with_path_to_a_file_in_the/), might help.

As in mentioned in the linked post,  `(setq ido-auto-merge-work-directories-length -1)` fixed it for me. You should try out `fido-mode`, I’m really happy with it.

C-f should switch to regular find file if I remember correctly, I recommend to read this : https://masteringemacs.org/article/introduction-to-ido-mode. And ido mode is great! I use ivy which is super stable and works with everything; also very nice tramp completion etc.

I recommend not to use ido-mode, there are lots of more featureful alternatives

When you want to create a new file, just C-f will basically kick you out of ido-mode and will let you create the file instead of ido-searching for it.

You can press C-j (ido-select-text), without exiting the ido-mode. For example, C-x f <name> C-j

I went ahead and fixed my config file, thank! Now I just need to decide via fido, ivy, helm. Leaning towards ivy, but idk.
