Newb question about UI

SuciasAreMyFavorite · 2022-02-17 04:06
# Preamble --- I've tried google, but I don't know/understand emacs terms enough to know what to search. I'm not asking for a config, or "edit some-variable-name" I want to learn and the best way for me is by *doing* I'm a prose writer and have converted my markdown novel into org. # The meat --- Since I don't use text editors for code, I'd like to have emacs "know" to use helvetica when I open an *.org file. I'd done something similar in vim where markdown files would word wrap at 100 characters and a few other things I've since forgotten. (I haven't written in over a year and it's been longer than that since I edited `init.vim` I've been playing around with prelude-emacs … distro? I'd like to use vanilla emacs but add whatever package pops up a mini-buffer? With hints after chording `C-c` or `M-x` # TLDR --- What variable should I look at to have org mode use helvetica font? What package gives hints after typing `C-c` , `M-x` etc #solutions --- Thanks to redditors I've learned that I can make/edit an org-config.el and used some snippets from Peter Prevos' [https://lucidmanager.org/productivity/ricing-org-mode](Ricing Org Mode- A Beautiful Writing Environment) and Hugo Cisenros' [https://hugocisneros.com/org-config](Org-mode configuration)

Enabling [which-key](https://github.com/justbur/emacs-which-key) will help you out with the keybindings stuff.

The emacs functions for setting fonts is ... Cumbersome. https://zzamboni.org/post/beautifying-org-mode-in-emacs/ step 2 of this blog describes how to do what you want (set a specific variable-width font and use it in Org Mode) but will affect anything which uses variable-pitch-mode.

Yes, this is what I was struggling with. "Default face" changes all fonts. Thanks for pointing me here

Thanks!!

You can have a look at the org-variable-pitch package: [https://github.com/cadadr/elisp/tree/8a3b529d5ece261a8847298ea03ed35615cc9bfa](https://github.com/cadadr/elisp/tree/8a3b529d5ece261a8847298ea03ed35615cc9bfa) And also valign ([https://github.com/casouri/valign](https://github.com/casouri/valign)) if you want variable pitch in tables too. But yes, cumbersome is the word, even with the help of those packages.

Have a look at LucidManager's post on ricing up Org mode: https://lucidmanager.org/productivity/ricing-org-mode/. Maybe you'll find a few useful things there.

yes, I found something on ricing org-mode, and a light clicked. Now I need to learn what different variables do.

> What variable should I look at to have org mode use helvetica font? I doubt there is such a variable, but I don't claim to know all the gazillion options Org provides. What I would do is set up an `org-mode-hook` function in which I would remap the `default` face to a different face, which uses Helvetica, only for a buffer whose `major-mode` is Org or its descendants. The function to study is `face-remap-add-relative`.

Shouldn't end users prefer `buffer-face-mode`, the nice little wrapper around face remapping?
eli-zaretskii · 2022-02-18 08:47
The OP didn't want to have different default faces in each buffer, only in Org buffers. IMO `buffer-face-mode` is overkill for that.
