I was trying to follow https://ianyepan.github.io/posts/emacs-ide/ to get `lsp-mode` configured for Python, but I got stuck at the very beginning, trying to get lsp-mode installed.
GNU Emacs 27.2
MacOS Monterey
Here's what I've tried since `use-package` failed.
- `package-refresh-contents`
- `package-install <RET> lsp-mode` -- this fails.
`package-compute-transaction: Package ‘spinner-1.7.3’ is unavailable`
package-archives is a variable defined in ‘package.el’.
Its value is
(("melpa" . "https://melpa.org/packages/")
("org" . "https://orgmode.org/elpa/"))
I've confirmed that both lsp-mode and lsp-pyright exist on Melpa unstable. Package-refresh-contents works fine. I just keep getting the same message about spinner-1.7.3 not being available. I can't even think how I would debug this further. :(

Seems that spinner is on elpa https://elpa.gnu.org/packages/spinner.html
So add elpa to your package archives

yes, that fixes it, thank you! I've had emacs configured for... several years without connecting to ELPA, and I had no idea that would cause problems. Very strange, and I really appreciate the help!

Note that there are now (starting from Emacs 28) *two* standard package archives defined:
(("gnu" . "https://elpa.gnu.org/packages/")
("nongnu" . "https://elpa.nongnu.org/nongnu/"))
Things in the (fairly new) Non-GNU ELPA are likely to also be found in MELPA, so if you use the latter you *probably* don't need the former; but you certainly don't want to remove GNU ELPA from the list -- the packages in there are highly likely to not be in any other package archive.

See https://melpa.org/#/getting-started
Using `add-too-list` to configure `package-archives` is a good idea, especially going forward. Some emacs core packages are now updated in GNU ELPA more often than the Emacs release cycle.
