Tired of leaving emacs to calculate your primer melting temperatures?? tmcalculator.el can help!

Wrote a quick wrapper to query NEB's Tm calculator API to quickly calculate annealing temperatures. Hopefully there is another bench biologist out there who will find this useful. https://github.com/amoghpj/tmcalculator.el

Wow this is one of the most delightfully niche posts I've seen here.

Wow. I was looking for this just a week back before writing my own. What a small world we live in, and it always surprises me what emacs can do

I have a bunch of other mol bio specific utilities, I'm thinking of putting together a small demo of how I use them. Would love to see how fellow biologists work in emacs!

There was a post some time ago about weird niche applications of emacs in the past, and one reply was about how some German airport ran it's air traffic control software written in elisp. That's the level I aspire to haha.
jigarthanda-paal · 2022-02-12 05:57
Oh yeah I remember that one
Bubbly_Weird · 2022-02-12 09:25
Do you happen to have the link for this post? I think I missed that
frydenlundfatol · 2022-02-12 09:54
Hahah, this is great! My only wish is that you would have uploaded it before I designed my last batch of primers. I'd be excited to see the other utilities you mention as well.

Awesome thanks
niwaka_ame · 2022-02-12 15:29
Hahah this is cool, mate. I also wrote a [wrapper](https://github.com/niwaka-ame/sgd-lookup.el) for the saccharomyces genome database (SGD) recently lol

Off-topic but since the Reddit search sucks, I think the best way to find old things on Reddit is with search operators (they work on DuckDuckGo, Google, and probably others). You can use `site:reddit.com` to only search Reddit, and then `inurl:/r/emacs` to limit the search to /r/emacs, and then use the quotes for an exact match, so: `site:reddit.com inurl:/r/emacs "elisp" "air traffic control"` gives me one match and it's that thread :) The downside to this is that Google thinks that you're a bot and blocks you after a couple of searches.
jalihal · 2022-02-12 19:06
Ok this is crazy. I have a custom `sgd:` link type in org mode to open up genes in SGD. And its double crazy that your example is GAL2, because I'm working on hexose transporters lolol.
niwaka_ame · 2022-02-12 21:26
Ohhhh I see your blog :) That's crazy - indeed i'm working on the GAL genes. Will PM you more details!

Is request not included in emacs? Tried to require it bit it's no there in emacs 28

> You can use `site:reddit.com` to only search Reddit, and then `inurl:/r/emacs` to limit the search to /r/emacs I can save you some unnecessary typing :) `site:reddit.com/r/emacs` combines those two things. (Or certainly it does on duckduckgo.)
