I don’t know where you’re looking but there is a LOT of content on using and configuring emacs.

> How should beginners like me learn Emacs? The tutorial. By default it’s started by pressing `C-h C-t` (that is Ctrl+H followed by Ctrl+T).

That guy has a very good videos. He has a playlist in which he does the basic configuration from scratch. I liked it a lot https://youtu.be/74zOY-vgkyw

Here's the deal. Read the tutorial. Then go here: https://jwiegley.github.io/use-package/installation/ Follow the instructions. Then restart emacs. Type "M-x list-packages". This will show you a list of packages. Hitting -Ctrl-M" will open a window where you'll see a link to their source code. In it you'll find instructions on configuration for each package. Use yse-package to install and configure your packages as described here: https://github.com/jwiegley/use-package/blob/master/README.md.. Some good starter packages: helm-projectile magit doom-themes doom-modeline lsp-mode After you have put a use-package form in your .emacs, save it and restart. Once you are used to it, you can do this without restart by going right outside the form and typing C-x C-e. After you've installed a few, it gets easier as the process of finding and configuring it according to the instructions is very repetitive. Finally, customize your theme by using M-x customize-theme, and selecting a theme with enter, then saving the buffer. Most other things can be customized using M-x customize-group typing part of what you're looking for, and hitting tab. This will bring up a gui for customization. Saving the customization buffer saves the customization. That's really it. Installing helm-projectile first will give you M-x fuzzy completion and display the bindings in the mini-buffer, which really helps.

There’s «Mastering Emacs», the in-emacs guide, tons of config files to check out online - several of them beginner friendly, in that they have «sane defaults». You could grab a minimalist init.el and comment out most, and gradually add stuff, to figure out what the different configurations do. Read about the packages used in configs of others. You can also configure via M-x customize-group, if you don’t feel like dealing with init.el directly to start with. And so on, and so forth.

How is everyone finding all these resources!? Seems impossible!

Only one or two? You jest. But I have a tip for you. Recently,a new internet search engine started. It is called "Google". Maybe you heard of it. And when you enter the search term "emacs youtube channels" into it,you get several direct hits to youtube, and also various discussions on Reddit where people shared their channels. I hope Google isn't too new for you,but you can be at the bleeding and nerdy edge if you are an early adopter and start using it !!! But if you start Emacs, you should first start with it's built-in tutorial.

They are supersearchers! Veritable engines of knowledge-discovery!

Hands down the most helpful for me: [https://www.youtube.com/c/systemcrafters](https://www.youtube.com/c/systemcrafters) David ran an Emacs for Scratch series last year that was great, and he's back with an updated version this year. Very highly recommended. I now have a configuration built from scratch and in which I understand most of it.

My advice : 1) watch the first YouTube videos of a series of tutorials like systemcrafters linked above to see the potential of emacs and check it could be your cup of tea 2) install emacs and do the built in tutorial for the basic commands 3) optional : install some packages that will help you learn emacs - which key : when you start typing a key bindings will display your options - helm : helps you find commands - use package : to configure quickly the packages you download 4) download the packages that interested you in the YouTube tutorial. Take the time to follow a tutorial for each package you download and configure it to your liking. Don't try to enable and download Everything at once or you'll get overwhelmed 5) optional : if you have notions of programming, you can get the full potential of emacs by writing your own customizations and functions. Emacs has an amazing built in help: - a tutorial for emacs-lisp, the language in which most emacs functions are written in. That's the weird language you saw in your config file. And many other topics. C-h i - you can see the documentation and source code of functions and variables by using the various help commands : C-h f, C-h v, C-h k so it is really easy to write your own. I have used many editors over the years but it is the first one for which i decided to write my own functions, so easy i absolutely love it. Anyway goodluck, and take your time. It might seem overwhelming at first so take it slow one step at the time, it is worth it

Aside from all the helpful things already said here, you might also take a look at all the links in the sidebar for r/emacs here... ;)
