define server. define "out of the box". many servers "out of the box" run exactly nothing other than an hypervisor. and it seems a rather useless number anyhow. also, your teacher challenged you to a paper describing why one is better than the other, not how many machine run one or the other; nor how many users one has compared to the other. Otherwise, trillions of flies cannot be wrong.

i want to write about ubiquity and one of the sections i want to talk about how vi/vim is installed in most unix based servers. j want to know if emacs is also as widely installed.

It's intellectually dishonest to ask people to do your research for you if you're writing a research paper.

what I've seen quoted a lot is that vi is part of the POSIX specification so if you have a POSIX compliant machine it'll have vi. now vi is not vim and both vim and emacs are an easy package installation away. also I don't know how many systemd are POSIX compatible 'out of the box' or like the other commenter said even what that means really. in addition with emacs specifically it works around the not being installed by its TRAMP library. so they have different solutions to different perceived problems. all of that is to say I'm not sure if there is a statistical source, or if there is how current it is.

its a 3 page report going over some key points in my argument lol. im 15 years old not writing some crazy phd dissertation or anything, i j want to make sure that im not talking out of my ass when i say that most unix machines come built in with vim and emacs requires an install. im not asking anyone to write it for me either.

> "Everyone ... is either stealing it or sharing it, they're all a bunch > of assholes, especially Radiohead." -- Erlich Bachman There's no such thing as intellectual dishonesty. You'll learn that in graduate school. I'll help you lil bruh.

> There's no such thing as intellectual dishonesty. That's actually a good example of intellectual dishonesty.
