Emacs completely ignoring my ~/.emacs.d folder since setting the theme via the gui menu's

10leej · 2022-02-01 12:43
I usually use doom emacs and wanted to give vanilla emacs a try so I deleted both me .doom.d and .emacs folder restarted the system and launched emacs. From there all I did was use the gui toolbar Options>Customize Emacs>Custom themes Well after deciding to go back to doom I once again deleted .emacs.d reinstalled and doom. However when I launch emacs I'm not getting doom just default emacs with the theme I set. What gives?

Do you have a ~/.emacs file? How about a ~/.config/emacs directory? My guess is you have something else that’s taking precedence.

check `user-init-file` variable
BobKoss · 2022-02-01 13:05
Did you do doom install what is DOOMDIR?
10leej · 2022-02-01 13:09
I did run doom install. It seems I had a rogue .emacs file sitting in the $HOME directory. Didn't even know that was a thing.

Ok I had a .emacs file sitting in $HOME, I probably should have thought of that...
colemaker360 · 2022-02-01 13:12
Did removing it work?
10leej · 2022-02-01 13:14
Yep

Easy mistake to make! I would go read [https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html\_node/emacs/Init-File.html](https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/emacs/Init-File.html) just for future reference, it goes over the resolution order of init files & how to load emacs with/without one.

rogue .emacs file haha. I loved your phrasing. Thanks for the laugh

Maybe we should add: Loaded user-init-file: /home/user/.emacs To the welcome page.

I honestly have never used any of emacs GUI settings. I started off using config files and didn't even know about the emacs ability to be configured through a GUI till much later. That being the case, I now think it much more difficult and not as customizable to use the GUI. Then again I am definitely bias. Honest Question: OP, why did you use the GUI? Do you think it's better/easier/whatever than dealing with emacs-lisp? Or something else.

I'm a newb, that's why, lol. I mostly use just stock doom emacs with no real configurative done

When I first started I tried doom emacs but when I wanted to change things and do my own customization, but I mostly found vanilla emacs examples online. I didn't know how to adapt them to work with doom emacs. So I started completely over with vanilla emacs so I could just copy and paste from the configurations I found online. Hindsight, it's not nearly as big of issue as I thought... But I learned **so much more** by doing it myself with vanilla emacs.

Yeah, I've been wanting to switch but I make my living with org mode in doom emacs so it's kinda hard to find time to setup gnu emacs
10leej · 2022-02-01 23:27
It's rogue when your explicically using a terminal al to remove just .emacs.d/
alexmeistercl · 2022-02-02 04:09
one can add it to the *dashboard* subtitle-ish
mok000 · 2022-02-02 08:47
Huh, I thought Doom Emacs was just a customized `.emacs.d`
10leej · 2022-02-02 17:10
It's is basically.
