But can it talk to God?
WallyMetropolis · 2022-01-28 22:59
For those unfamiliar, this documentary is extremely engaging.

If it's the one I remember, it's very sad as well.
sceadu · 2022-01-29 00:08
Maybe if you combine Eliza and god-mode
ieure · 2022-01-29 00:10
Someone who knows how I use EXWM, org, elfeed, mu4e, magit, etc etc etc once told me "Emacs is basically your TempleOS."
I think about that a lot.
alexmeistercl · 2022-01-29 01:09
Looks cool, what font are you using?
Doomer1999 · 2022-01-29 02:11
Dot files?
onearmedphil · 2022-01-29 03:36
Damn.. kinda makes ya think
Hammar_Morty · 2022-01-29 04:06
How'd you get used to mu4e? I use emacs for basically everything but mail just seemed like so much of a hassle setting up for something I don't enjoy doing in the first place.
LemonBreezes · 2022-01-29 05:02
I feel the same way. I just spent most of the day working on migrating as much usage as possible from Chrome to EWW. I just need GitHub repo/code search to uninstall Chrome.

> How'd you get used to mu4e?
mu4e works a lot like most email programs did when I first started using email, so it was less "get used to" and more yes, this is how email is supposed to be. Like, replies indented underneath the thread in a proper tree structure? Hell yes, gimme that.
> I use emacs for basically everything but mail just seemed like so much of a hassle setting up for something I don't enjoy doing in the first place.
It wasn't *awful* to set up, but there is a whole mess of not great documentation around it. The most annoying part isn't mu4e, but setting up offlineimap or mbsync. I'd recommend mbsync at this point, I moved over to it and it wasn't awful. You will need some way to securely store your credentials, I use `pass(1)` and password-store.el, which works well.
Email is a lot more enjoyable in mu4e. Like most Emacs things, it pretty much stays out of your way unless you want to do something, and if it doesn't do what you want, it can. I also really like that when I start an Org capture from an email, it adds a link back to it — extremely helpful for an appointment where you want to reference a location or phone number you were emailed.

So this is GUIX in tt1 no X right? If I could run a full browser and mpv without X, that's how I would do. 43 packages, nice!
Danrobi1 · 2022-01-29 05:58
> How'd you get used to mu4e?
You're right. There's already GNUS. So why installing extra software.
> I use emacs for basically everything but mail just seemed like so much of a hassle setting up
Try that. I use Yahoo but it will be easy for you to change values according to your needs.
- Add this in your init file: (setq message-send-mail-function 'smtpmail-send-it)
Add the `gnus-select-method` below code in `~/.gnus` for email.
(setq gnus-select-method '(nnimap "yahoo"
(nnimap-address "imap.mail.yahoo.com")
(nnimap-server-port 993)
(nnimap-stream ssl)))
(open-gnutls-stream "tls" "tls-buffer" "imap.mail.yahoo.com" "imaps")
Once you run `M-x gnus` you'll be prompt for your email and password. Nice and simple!

I'm pretty sure you can run mpv without x. You can definitely [run mplayer without x](https://www.reddit.com/r/unixporn/comments/a6ee0l/tty_playing_youtube_while_coding_without_xorg/). If I remember correctly mplayer is a bit better for this purpose because it works with size/positioning arguments (so you can put it over an empty tmux pane), but mpv doesn't for some reason.

Pulled the ttf from here [https://github.com/rendello/templeos\_font](https://github.com/rendello/templeos_font) its a little squashed though.

I gotch you.
Barbaloot_Suit · 2022-01-29 07:04
I'm not sure what tt1 is. Im using wsl2 to run guix its a hack but it works well for the most part.

Terry bless you
SevenIsNotANumber2 · 2022-01-29 07:41
Ah yes, the classic "spending 24 hours a day optimising your workflow which you dont have because all you do is trying to optimise the workflow"
SevenIsNotANumber2 · 2022-01-29 07:43
He meant that this is console-only without any GUI
LemonBreezes · 2022-01-29 08:10
Yeah. But to be honest, I just want to not deal with non-Emacs things anymore. By doing everything in Emacs, I am simplifying my life and DevOps. Ergonomics is also everything to me.

I was very happy with Gnus except that my work email is on an Exchange server so I was accessing that with IMAP which is extremely slow. They made some config change a while ago and it got slower still... So I thought I'd try mu4e. It requires you to fetch mail into a local mailbox, so I figured out DavMail. Then I started using mu4e, it's fine especially the search is blazing fast, but it's... not Gnus. Then I realised DavMail solved my IMAP problem, so I'm back to Gnus again, all's well that ends well 🙂
Danrobi1 · 2022-01-29 13:40
Nice, I didnt know about mplayer without X.
ramin-honary-xc · 2022-01-29 13:49
Yep, that was a good documentary. And it was very sad. I mean, I don't want to excuse his racism, but he could have got better with proper mental health care. One of the last interviews he did with a couple of kids who tracked him down, he was so perfectly lucid it felt like hearing talk from one of my vintage computer hobbyist buddies. He died like less than a year after that.
ramin-honary-xc · 2022-01-29 13:51
All computers talk to God! How else would we get random numbers?
ramin-honary-xc · 2022-01-29 13:58
Oh, totally! I remember reading [a review of Temple OS](http://www.codersnotes.com/notes/a-constructive-look-at-templeos/ ), and I was kind of blown away by how it was basically Emacs. It was a kernel and shell written in x86 assembler language, with a high-level C-like scripting language called "Holy C" which could be compiled or interpreted which he used to program apps -- so basically like Emacs Lisp without the property of being a homoiconic language. (Maybe homoiconic languages were blasphemous according Terry Davis? :-/ )
cazzipropri · 2022-01-29 15:28
Yes, but TempleOS has an integrated RNG-to-Godtalk converter!

> How'd you get used to mu4e?
I got angry enough at the email program I was using and decided that if I'm switching to something new I might as well put it in emacs if I could.
I tweaked some keybindings to make it work the way I wanted and then I used it for a week. After that I was hooked and you couldn't pay me to go back.
