Awareness but not control
H.R. Giger · 2024-03-10 11:00
For the last month or two, every time I've dreamt I've been aware of it. I'll suddenly realise I'm dreaming in the middle of one and then be unable to control or do anything out of the ordinary. Does anyone have any idea what this means? I don't do drugs (last time I did anything was around was around the start of this year), and I don't keep a dream journal. I can remember most of the events of the dreams but not really specific details all that much. I also usually have multiple distinct dreams in one night. I can have a dream from a 10 minute nap, I've even dreamt during school settings. I've included this info in case it's useful. Thank you.

did you do anything in particular to get to the awareness stage? I can't even manage that, though I've come close.

Your dream experience sounds a whole lot different than mine. I don't dream much (or don't remember them) but the few that do come through are very long and seem to share a theme.
It used to really rustle me and I tried smoking weed years ago because it generally made the dreams go away or at least become incoherent... but I don't like weed much and stopped smoking (also years ago) and now I just deal.
Some days getting out of bed is a real trip though. Actually a trip, like you got home from a long time away or something.
Due to all this, I've never really tried to lucid dream. I'm not too keen to look around dreamland.

No, I'm just aware when I go into them.

Mine are short but there have been times where I can tell I am waking up and intentionally stop myself in order to dream more

that happens a lot to me too, last time that happenned was actually last night
as a kid i remember having bad dreams and realising they're dreams and trying to wake up but being unable to, which usually made me sad and even more scared
nowdays i mostly do something bad or embarrassing and when i realise it's a dream i "wake up" within the dream and have a new dream after that
i've also never had a lucid dream after realising it's a dream even though i realised that's how they're supposed to start

This is just called lucid dreaming and is a common phenomenon. There exist many communities of people online and offline who focus on cultivating this skill to various ends.

most people in those spaces consider lucid dreams to be only the dreams that you can control though

Yes, because that is the definition of a lucid dream. If you are unaware you are dreaming and unable to control the dream, it's not a lucid dream.

i'm just saying that "Awareness but not control" is not really what these communities usually discuss

I misread the OP. I read "and then be able to control"
My bad.

today i had a dream where i realised i was dreaming and i remembered this thread in the dream and told myself to post about it here when i wake up
strangely enough i stopped being aware of dreaming a while after that, basically once i stopped thinking about it

happened today too
i remember trying to control the dream and then getting a bit mad because i couldn't
i'm gonna stop bumping if it keeps happenning though probably

Its strange yall brought this up, i rarely remember anything from my dreams, but recently tho i had similar experiences like described.
I become aware that the rules are bent and things are not real, but i dont work up the initiative to do anything about it, im close tho.
Time will tell where this leads to, but i have a feeling my dream awareness is altered in some way.

I call that a half lucid dream, very common for me
