overcoming creative block
Jane Doe · 2024-02-12 15:16
i play guitar and sing and music is my passion. i try to write music every day but nothing happens. the only music ive written is music that sounds interesting or cool but nothing i write actually channels the emotional content i want to channel in my writing. i can imitate artists i like, but i feel like the process of writing music doesn't come naturally to me; especially with writing lyrics and melodies. all my friends have unique talents and passions and i feel like a failure.

I usually focus my creative energy toward another activity whenever this happens, just draw something or start another song.
Weed enhances creativity, I don't know how it is for music but when it comes to screenwriting occasional use of weed can help writer's block, however more than half the stuff I write while high goes in the trash.

i feel like im constantly cycling through ideas, but i never actually formulate a song that i really resonate with. also weed makes me feel absolutely miserable. every time i get high its just like anxiety, derealization, and panic.

why not quit weed then lmao dude. "Doctor it hurts when I poke my eye really hard!" Stupid lain!
Do you write poems and rhymes just for fun ? maybe try it without thinking too hard about music and then look at putting them together if that goes well.

i don't smoke i just mean the few times i have in the past it has been miserable. ive tried writing some poetry but its hard to make it rhythmically and melodically compatible. writing lyrics first is easier for me than writing lyrics after though.

That's what happens when you don't look up a strain before buying it.
I love weed but if it says paranoia or anxiety on the strain's leafly profile I avoid it.

its just the cognitive effects that make me feel weird. like absolutely nothing about the high is enjoyable and ive tried edibles, carts, pens, etc and they all feel the same. im kinda hypersensitive to weed and psychs.

You're not missing out on much don't worry about it.
Just assimilate your shadow and practice self discipline and you should be ok, creativity is a curse and if you don't do some basic shadow work you're gonna go feral like Kanye West.

how exactly would i go about practicing shadow work and self-discipline

Kind of the same thing happens to me.
I do music as well and most of the time, the ideas that i have are either not finished or thrown in the trash after i get bored with them.
I am able to do cool stuff, but i've never been able to make something with actual meaning and it's getting a toll on me; i really dont know what to do asides from more and more songs.
I can't really take a break from it because whenever i try to do so, i start to feel like i'm just being lazy, that i'll never be good enough to drop a debut album, and that i'm taking part in corporate brainwash.
In any given case, stay strong lain; composing is thing that only comes naturally once you spend a big chunk of your life practicing it and also, (this may help) talking with other people that are into it as well.
Isolation is a great way to get inspiration and all, but other fellows also have great ideas.

Read Jung and clean your room, start lifting and/or martial arts.
The shadow stuff, as I understand it, is basically the realisation that everytime you bitch about someone you're most likely projecting your own flaws onto them.
Hope this helps.

You probably consume too much creative medium. Like with wet dreams you only without fail get them after abstaining for days or months..
If you constantly listen to a lot of interesting/new stuff you may end up having your brain "filled" so it stops making something new. What I do is I actually have some seeds or music I made that I already find nice, I keep playing them and naturally I have developed my own style of music from that alone. Well it's not really one kind of genre, there's a lot of it, it's just that when I practice it I tend to play my own music and I've forbidden myself from playing other existing music outside of the very few stuff I really really liked.
Now it gets easier to imitate something since I have and own my "own music" so it feels like when I imitate other styles (like the popmusic riff) I feel like I can quickly go back to my own style. Eventually I also developed ability to just do music by feel, it really helps to try to practice jazz and "jive" with jazz music you listen to and try to add your arrangement. Now with certain more structured music (since jazz improvs are not really structured and it's like a cheat) it is much harder since with structured ones you can't really make mistakes unlike with jazz where you actually embrace mistakes. Singing and lyricmaking part is a bit different. I just focus more on the tune and the drums (I don't play drums but I'm confident I can probably learn it). One of the most important aspect is ability to detect or use the proper beats and capitalize on it. Say you can even start a jazz session or a certain mood of song just by going with a certain BPM.
So my tip is:
>BPM theory
certain stuff have certain bpm, it's mostly shared across cultures, a march is usually almost the same everywhere, sad is slow, melancholic is somewhat upbeat, etc.
>music theory study is a meme
music is more on "monkey see, monkey do" much like dancing is. you can already build your music even without the fundamentals of a "theory"
>jazz improvs
it helps in mastery of the instrument, get to the point where you can easily feel the tension of strings and tell how it sounds like with just the string tension. stop using chords. "playing correctly" is restraining than it is creating.

Often times i smoke weed to try and help get inspiration for my drawing. i find that when i smoke the ganja and listen to specific songs a whole movie mannifests itself into my brain where i see my characters doing all sorts of crazy stuff. main problem is that due to the fact that im high i end up focusing to hard on the vision and not putting said vision to paper ;\ now after 5 years all i have is a bunch of notes and concept art but part of me feels no one will really notice if it got released... but still gotta focus on your dream because thats the only thing that matters in life choom
PS. pardon my crap spelling or awkwardness never posted on a chan site before

i have the same problem. i've been making electronic music since forever but now that i want to express myself i just can't. the closest i ever got to actual self-expression was when trying to make harsh noise but it's harder (and more boring) than it sounds

If you play guitar, play some chords in arpeggios and some fill notes. Make it crazy, weird, nonsensical chord changes and notes. Most of it will sound like soykaf. But once in a while, you will accidentally play something really cool that's new and different from the usual boring crap. That can be the basis for a song or a middle section. Do the same thing with crazy-ass lyrics until something cool and interestin happens. Sometimes changing your guitar sound or effects will make you more sensitive to how chords and melodies sound. When you get a little bit of something good, record it right away before you forget it, even if it's a soykafty recording. Then listen to all of it later, pick out the good bitts and assemble a song from it. If you can't play worth a soykaf, make a multi-track midi arrangement using a sequencer with a piano-roll input.
And write a god damned melody, not some fuarrrking droning background crap like most people do.
