Lately I've been struggling a lot with sleeping. My girlfriend got ADHD and has a lot of trouble falling asleep.
I usually fall asleep within 10 minutes after putting my head on the pillow but she usually takes 60 minutes to fall asleep. She also needs more sleep so usually when I wake up she complains about feeling sleep-deprived and since she's also extremely sensitive to light and noise I can't get out of bed without bothering her.
This has been a serious issue since sleep is important for her productivity and mood. Today I observed her and noticed that she was moving around about every 20 seconds in bed unlike me who doesn't move an inch after laying on the bed, which probably explains why I fall asleep so easily. She's on amphetamine during the day so she can't take any powernaps.
Does lainon have any tips or tricks on how to help her fall asleep easier?

How regular is her sleep? I have been trying to make sure I get up/go to bed at the same time every day, and that has helped me out a lot. I also try to take some melatonin before bed.

A little caffeine about an hour before bed helps me fall asleep. Just a soda's worth, not a coffee. Calms the ADHD thoughts but isn't stimulating enough to keep me up.
Is she on instant release or extended release amphetamine? Extended release can make it harder to fall asleep.

my psychologist told me to only go to bed when i feel so tired that i can't keep my eyes open. It works since I'm NEET, otherwise I'd have to do physical activities so I'm more tired. Sometimes when almost tired enough sex works to really tire me out. Also important to avoid eating food too close to bed time as feeling warm from food makes falling asleep extra uncomfortable. Recommending good mattress too. I hope any of these tips are useful. -someone with ADHD sleep issues; doing somewhat better

Why would amphetamine stop her from taking powernaps? Is her dosage too low?

Could she take her ADHD meds earlier in the morning?

It's a stimulant. For most people, it makes sleep more difficult.
There is a common misconception that stimulants act as sleep aids for people suffering from ADHD, but that's a myth. Only 1 in 20 people experience sleepiness as a side effect of it and that rate is consistent whether they've been diagnosed with adhd or not.

Maybe the doc could prescribe her some lorazepam idk tho if one should take benzos with adhd medication, however i had a serious issue with insomnia that worsened my depression and lorazepam with a strict sleeping schedule helped me af.

I've had sleep problems before and it really is like kicking dead whales down the beach. >>5137 is good advice, although I personally I've never taken melatonin. Keeping a routine (for at least 3 or 5 days) and making sure she's in bed by a certain time, for a certain time in an environment with reasonable conditions (light, noise, temperature) should help. I've been told that getting up at a certain time can help too, but I don't have much experience with that. Also, try not to go to bed with a heavy stomach or without having been to the restroom. It's likely she feels drowsy at particular time ranges in the day/night, try to pay attention to any noticed patterns and use them to your advantage. Look into: "Circadian rhythm". Best of luck, and my condolences.
