At this point I give up: I'm chronically sleep deprived and things won't change soon. Any lifehacks or tips to stay cognitively sharp while sleeping like soykaf that don't involve drugs? I can't afford most of them and my tolerance to caffeine has made coffee useless. I hear about power naps but I can't seem to fall asleep even for a shorter while with all the noisy of daily life.
My environment can't be helped at the moment, that's why I'm looking only for short-term solutions.

Honestly, all advice I have is to avoid driving if possible. Being sleep deprived makes it so much more dangerous.

If you want to beat a disease, you need to learn the cause of that disease. After a little research, I found the following reasons that can cause insomnia: (Maybe there are some things that are not written here, you can do a more detailed research if you want.)
>Medicine use
>Emotional or physical discomfort
>Noise, light or excessive heat
>Jetlag after travel
>Depression
> Thyroid diseases
>Psychological reasons
>Chronic stress
If you have found the reason, the only thing left is to find the solutions easily and apply them. if you are having trouble at this point, you may need to see a life coach or doctor.
These are the recommendations I can give for now, lainon. Take care of yourself

Give power naps another try. The aim is 26min of uninterrupted resting. Even if you don't fall asleep you'll still benefit greatly from them.
There's a ton of studies behind them, due to NASA putting funding behind it for their astronauts that you can look into if you're interested.

first, to solve ur sleeping problem:
remove caffeine from ur diet. caffeine acts like an amphetamine. it will keep u up, but dependence will lead to chronic insomnia.
workout. cardio, esp right before bed, will wear you out and your body will want to rest.
go outside and watch the sunset before bed assuming you want to fall asleep sometime soon after. this has been shown to help reset ur circadian rhythm.
sleep in a cold room. the lowest point in ur circadian cycle (which is based on bodily temperature) is during a deep sleep. help it reach that point.
these together should solve ur sleepiness issue almost immediately.
but if those dont work or you dont have the willpower to do them, this might put a bandaid on it:
find something to keep u engaged in the moment, like a podcast. something that can go on in the background while you do whatever.

Extra vitamin C supposedly may be enough to prevent just the worst effects (death, short-term memory loss). They've only tested on fruit flies and rats, but by supplementing them with antioxidants such as vitamin C it appears to mitigate the increase of ROS and cortisol which are caused by sleep deprivation and stress. Too much ROS cause cellular oxidative stress (cellular damage) and too much cortisol increases blood pressure which causes a litany of cardiovascular diseases. Read these below articles/studies and decide for yourself. I say try to get at least 120mg daily. Most non-snake-oil sources seem to say the human body cannot absorb more than 200mg in a day, and once you consume beyond 100mg you already get diminishing returns in plasma concentration of ascorbic acid. I do not recommend exceeding way beyond 250mg regularly due to increased risk of kidney stones and diarrhea, it's not worth it and you gain nothing from doing so, so always cut tablets if you decide to take supplements as opposed to natural sources (e.g. either 2 oranges, 2 kiwis, 7 boiled potatoes, 12 bananas, 12 apples or 6 tomatoes to get 120mg).

I think that poing about vit C dosage is wrong, it highly depends on it's form. I've been dosing myself some 2-3g daily since Corona started, prior to that I would use for a few months then pause a few months until I remember to mix some up again.
However the only two ways to take effective vit C seem to be IV and liposomal, and I've been making latter myself. Supposedly there's no risk of kidney stones like this, also I can claim based on a study I conducted on my family members, diarhhea is not an issue with liposomal C as long as you make sure to form liposomes properly.

have you tried not saturating your bloodstream with caffeine? call me crazy but it might help with your sleep problems.

There aren't any. Coffee, Vitamin C can help and try taking a nap like 20-60 mins >>5035 You should also try to go to bed early (it's better to go to bed early and wake up earlier).

OP here, 2 weeks since I made the thread and have tried some of the advice here.

I tried it, just laid in bed with an alarm 25 minutes later, didn't seem to do anything, I just got impatient but entertained myself with my thoughts until the alarm played, did I do it wrong?

Vitamin C seems to work, not sure if it's just placebo, but munching on acerola and orange juice helped a bit with keeping up on cognitive tasks.
I can't really go to sleep early, most of my trouble round down to my specific circumstance at the moment that as I said, can't be helped, thus I'm looking for short-term solutions.

Your blood sugar levels increased from consuming the fruit. A cup of orange juice (w/ no added sugars) contains about 25g of sugar. An increase in vitamin C isn't something you can notice unlike a sugar high. I only suggested increasing vitamin C intake to reduce or mitigate a potentially increased risk of death or short-term memory issues caused by sleep deprivation.

Cardiovascular exercise ~1 hour before bed completely fixed my poor sleep patterns. I went from being a total zombie all the time, to waking up refreshed almost every morning. If you haven't tried this yet, I highly recommend it.
