hypnagogia/ hypnagogic hallucinations
Zero Cool · 2021-09-01 19:04
I have experienced some hypnagogic hallucinations recently and I was wondering if it was possible to achieve this state indefinitely? This isn't the first time i experienced it and when I do experience it i feel a weird bliss, but unfortunately this would all be cut short as I would become fully aware of it and wake up. Would be nice to be able to achieve this state at will.

I had it all the time, every night before I fell asleep as a child. I was fully aware during it, dare I say awake. It served me as an intro to sleep and dreaming. I thought everyone had it. Unfortunately I lost it after I grew up and now it's a total mystery. I remember it starting after I would close my eyes and stare at the blackness my eyelids created. It would last 10-20 minutes, even longer.

I envy you. I've always had hypnagogic experiences, but lately I have them almost every day, going to sleep and sometimes waking up, and even I feel like I only sleep half the night and the other half I am in various states. Often it is quite uncomfortable more than anything.
No you cannot hold onto this state permanently. It makes sense to come out of it anyway so you can contextualize what you experience.

Reading your post just now was a realization for me that not everyone experiences these. Its a very bizarre experience to find out something you never really consciously thought as being true, but still unknowingly arrived at conclusions based on it, and now you feel as though a huge part of these conclusions evaporate as soon as you think of them. Even weirder is the fact that as soon as I stop thinking of them after the realization that they were baseless I cannot conceptualize them again and all I am left with is the memory, that something was there, but the specifics are hard to grasp. I wonder if this is an automatic mechanism in the human brain to make sure you are not drawn to manually and needlessly reexamine data that is not compatible with the core data that is usually used for taking actions (doing stuff).
Also, I really envy you about being able to stare at the blackness that one's eyelids create, since I wasn't able to experience that for many years now due to contracting visual snow syndrome at the age of 16, or so, because of psychedelics usage. I am also touching upon that, because nowadays the quickly moving mosaic of pixelated colors that I see when I stare into the darkness often starts to become organized and structured before I fall asleep. An easily understandable example of this organization are geometric shapes, although usually its just changes in movement of the miniature dots, or the tempo of "pulsation" of the whole field of vision.
Also its weird for me that you can tell that it lasted 10-20 minutes, since for me the feeling of time always becomes somewhat fuarrrked up when you enter into that state.
Last thing, I noticed that when my sleep schedule goes completely off the rails these before sleep hallucinations become stronger. Another factor is the intake of information and the intensity with which you interact with the world around you during the day. When I read a lot of difficult stuff, or even when I used to play a game for 16 hours straight the hallucinations greatly grew in intensity. I will probably read up on the subject, cuz its really intriguing to learn what are the inner workings of the natural states that make you lose clarity of thought. Its similar to reading up on why one cannot reduce human interaction to some more basic theory and not suffer the negative consequences, or why if you believe in God only pragmatically it doesn't have the soothing effect that belief without utility as its main goal possesses.

I meant that Its a very bizarre experience to find out that something you never really consciously thought as being true is false, when you used to draw conclusions from it and incorporate them into how you act for a long time. (Yes it is possible to do it without being conscious of the thing you draw conclusions from, but I really don't have the time to go into detail rn. Even if it weren't, you could have an idea in its place that is either really hard to access and was only arrived at once before, or an idea that is similar in how it interacts with most of your knowledge, but is "made of a different cloth", just like an imagination of an image is "made from a different cloth" than an imagination of a sound, or smell, but can play a similar role in your, from a lack of a better word, system. Can give you similar results in what you arrive at when used as inspiration, among other ways it can be related to other things you believe and used in conjectures. So I don't have to delve that deep into it seeing how many possibilities are there.)

>achieve this state at will
I used hemi-sync files to meditate (though to be clear you can use any sort of meditation practice to achieve this) and often times found myself in a hypnagogic state. Surprisingly done in the middle of a lecture. I've had my luck reaching this state in unguided meditation but I often prefer having some audio file as an anchor so I don't drift off

These usually happen when I'm very stressed. Outside of stress I can attain them if I allow myself to be inbetween paralysis and sleep.

am i just doing something wrong because my hypnagogic hallucinations are just blobs of color moving around whenever i go to sleep

You can do it at will, just takes a little patience to get started. Best way is to lay down in a way that you don't usually go to sleep in, like propped up with pillows, and try to maintain a state of high drowsiness found immediately before falling asleep. You don't have to try and get sleep paralysis or dissociation with the body. Don't concentrate on looking out for hallucinations or anything. The only concentration is to hold your drowsiness steady to be the catalyst. Try to keep the visuals uninhibited and relaxed, don't be afraid to daydream a little too as this can kickstart it beyond just vague shapes or brief flashes of hypnagogia. At some point the hallucinations should become vivid and dreamlike. After 5 or so minutes of this sustained you might become less drowsy, which is less important once the hallucinations are vivid - it's more important you do not interrupt the flow of the hypnagogic state. Usually the contents at first are like absurd abstractions of dreams, yet just as vivid as a dream in many ways. With enough practice you can direct the hallucinations and have something more organized happen, as well as sustain it longer and get into the state with less drowsiness and effort.

Oh yeah if you really get in the groove of it you're fine to re-adjust your body, open your eyes and otherwise do small unobtrusive things. It definitely risks ending it sure, but once it gets going it doesn't tend to just drop off immediately after interruption.

Probably. When I get those it's just regular closed eye hallucinations, maybe you get those too.

Had it like a week ago, decided for some reason to stay aware while having my eyes closed in bed, and saw some trippy soykaf.
Suddenly i was in a dark, shiny orange room with some equally shiny and orange machine in front of me. The sound was loud and it was like when you play a video at 0.01 speed. Then it was like a screensaver with fuzzy triangles and a clear sentence appeared that I just couldn't read. Then I got booted out.
I get similar, but more scary experiences almost with certainty when I eat a lot and take a nap. Maybe you can try that.
