Therapeutic use of sleep deprivation in depression

Gyula Kovacs · 2021-04-14 06:07
I've lately been forcing myself to get up at 5AM no matter how late I went to sleep, and noticed I've felt less soykafty as a result. Looks like it's not just placebo: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12531127/ >Total sleep deprivation (TSD) for one whole night improves depressive symptoms in 40-60% of treatments. The sleep deprivation has its own effects but they're more manageable than flat-out depression. Plus a little nap during the day helps. Opinions?

Isn't it basically like getting drunk but without drugs?

If you're not going to read the whole article at least read the whole abstract

>>4410 Honestly, this makes a lot of sense. I often find myself feeling less depressed whenever I would stay up for around 36+ hours. It kind of gave off the same sensation as smoking weed.

>>4418 How anyone can stay up longer than 24h without dying is a mystery to me. But yes staying up overly long has a similar effect as when i smoke from morning to night.

>>4419 I've managed to stay up 72+ before. Now that's an experience I assure you.

>>4410 Going without sleep is bad for your heart and thus also your kidneys. You don't want to be on pills and or dialysis or anything else bad so I'd just get regular sleep.

>>4419 >this nibba didn't even stay up 5 days at a time at least once in his life you're missing out

My uneducated guess is that any kind of altered state often helps depression, including a sleep deprived one. I think youl see it actually making it worse if you continue sleep depriving yourself unless of course you actually do just only need the hours of sleep you consider "sleep deprived". Oversleeping makes depression worse but is also a symptom of depression. The reason I think sleep deprivation outside of this would help if infrequent, and why I think its not the sleep deprivation but just altered mind states in general, is that they give perspective. Coping with depression in terms of thoughts is always about reminding yourself that things arent as bad as they seem, that there is an answer, that you arent stuck being x or y thing that makes you depressed. Being in new states of mind makes it easier to see how the depression isnt reality itself, its just like a lens. Its not purely "just perspective', when you return to baseline you have the depression still. But its far easier and more real now to note that you are not depressed because of anything really happening, the world itself is not soykaf, you simply are depressed and there is no answer or thing you must do or run away from. Its just a bad feeling you sit with.

>>4655 your brain, too. sleep is how you flush waste buildup out of your brain. sleep deprivation for one night can be useful to unfuck a bad sleep schedule, but it's not something to do recreationally. your brain is your most valuable organ!

Cold water therapy would be better for you than depriving yourself of sleep.

>>4410 >forcing oneself to get up early that's not sleep deprivation my N!gga, that's called the start of a healthy routine. Now supplement that with morning stretches, a healthy, balanced diet and excercise during the day, and you will forget what depression even means.

>>4843 Not that lainon but cold water therapy and cryotherapy (cold generally) activates your body's regenerative mechanisms (like DNA repair, aiding apoptosis of damaged cells IIRC). Also reheating your body gives a nice feeling of relaxation which also improves blood circulation, tissues get more oxygen and nutrients which in the end improves your well-being. And you probably get free happiness drugs from your brain for surviving. Sleep deprivation is a massive stress for your body and I don't recommend it. It might work for a short time but long-term side effects will destroy you.

Ive found that lack of sleep can actually make my mental health worse. I end up being on edge and very raw the rest of the day. i think waking up at 5 is fine, but for me I need to prioritize getting enough sleep (8+ for me) in order to be able to do that in a healthy way.

got no sleep Wednesday and Friday (around 36 hours each) (not out of choice). Felt like utter soykaf after the first time, actually suicidal. Felt pretty good after the second time. Now I feel just normal. I don't really like it because I want to socialise in the evening but by 5 I'm bout ready to collapse. Thinking about getting a script but just know it's going to be like blood from a stone. I cannot nap, I just wake up with blurred vision, mind fog, disorientation, tremors, dizziness, etc.. Yeah, yeah I know, you're doing it wrong, set a timer blah blah blah shut the fuarrrk up.

Just how bad is getting 5 hours of sleep during a five day work week but then sleeping around 8-9 hours on my days off?
