Reality defined

Case · 2020-02-15 22:51
what we see as reality is in reality a number of electrical pulses that our minds interpret into vision. thus are dreams not an entire reality of impulses created by the brain? or even yet Intercepted by the brain from somewhere else? we define dreams as not real due to the fact that we generally forget them or take a surreal character, yet all we have to compare is the real world, which in our minds case is just another interpretation of electrical input. Thus it is not entirely unreasonable to see dreams as a simulation, or imagination of reality? If we could access dreams on a greater scale, and it is logical to assume that dreams are mashed crossroad of our lives, our thoughts and our imagination, that these electrical pulses of the dream, fully realized, would be just as real to us as reality? I am not entirely unconvinced that we simply live in what can only be described as an information defigned dream, maybe at some point neuro programming will allow us to change how we see the dream at the base level, change how our brain interprets information, much alike to what drugs do today, perhaps one day we will entirely change our world, colours, sounds, crazy.

>>2896 reality is electrical pulses caused by interaction with the physical world and dreams are just 'random' electrical pulses generated by our brains. dreams are a by-product of resting. it would probably be easier just to trick the brain with fake environmental stimuli than to repurpose dreams. expanding our senses shouldn't be too hard though. i wonder what sounds and colors our world is hiding from us...

>>2897 they are not random. the "electrical pulses of dreams" are produced by the "electrical pulses of daytime", what you call reality. dreams are reality, and the proof of that is that our reality is highly influenced by human dreams, like single dreams of leaders, prophets, discoverers, inventors, or the millions of dreams of everyday people. even if they were true random, they are in such a tight connection with people, who are part of reality, that they have the chance to become reality or manipulate reality in a way either expected or unexpected. i think we have two words that are totally meaningless. "reality" and "natural". everything that we can ever come in contact with is reality. if we want to have constructive discussions, we should form statements, and we can argue about if that statement is true or not, saying something is not part of reality is meaningless. other one is "natural", i think everything is natural, i can't really see the difference between a termite mound and a human city, but you might point it out for me. i also can't really see the difference between when humans exterminating an animal species or another animal species doing the same. i also can't really see the difference between humans changing the atmosphere's composition and temperature by factories and cars, or algae and bacteria doing the same as they did it several times during the geologic history. (yes they did it much slower but we are much more efficient animals, that's why we came to existence in the first place)

>what we see as reality is in reality a number of electrical pulses I stopped reading here. Reality contains the electrical pulses and the brain. Definitions of "reality" that say otherwise suck. What a short-lived thread.

it is impossible to seperate simulus from the outside world from the outside world itself. Your "internal perception" is a mishmash of stuff at different stages of the information pipeline. In this sense, dreams can be differentiated from reality by the information content they contain. It's all on a "higher level", i.e. more abstracted, reconstructed from memory. When you dream, even though it might not feel like it at the time, there is less detail, because all the stimulus is pre-processed. Meanwhile in real life, the raw input forms a substantial part of what we see. I don't know about you but even when I have dreams where I "wake up", I can very clearly tell when I have actually woken up. Reality is far more real than any dream world could be.
