Technology in dreams
Elaine · 2019-10-25 19:43
Hey, I've heard that things like computers and phones aren't really supposed to work when you're dreaming, but I almost always use my computer during my dreams.
It's not in every dream, but I can remember using my text editor, checking books (on my computer) for reference, chatting with people, listening to music, etc. during my dreams. Sometimes is hard to tell dreams apart from reality because they feel so mundane to me...
Is that "technology doesn't work in dreams" thing a myth? Has anyone else experienced this? Or is it that growing up with computers has completely messed up my brain?
(It's my first post here, please be gentle)

I'd reckon that it's just your brain playing back the stuff you do quite often on your computer - like those you mentioned. Since you remember them well, it will appear as if they're the real thing.

i have these a lot too! i'll dream about chatting online, watching weird videos, drawing and it all seems so real. a few times i've woken up scared because i thought i sent something stupid to somebody and caused a whole lot of drama but it turns out it didn't happen.
when you dream, you usually dream about the stuff you do on a day to day basis like the other lainon said so its not surprising to dreams about it.
maybe the rumor started early on when tech was still new to the average person? they wouldn't be able to use it as much as we do daily so they were probably less likely to dream about it. at least thats my guess.

Yeah, I guess you're right, I guess being on the computer all day every day of my life would eventually lead to me using computers during dreams.

Something similar happens to me too. Say I was having trouble with my Emacs config: I'd spend all day trying to fix it, but I actually don't manage to do it. then I'd dream about actually fixing it, and when I wake up and get back on my computer I'd be like "wait, didn't I fix that already?". It kinda messes with my head honestly.
Yeah, that rumour probably started before technology became so widespread, though I think that other rumour about not being able to read during dreams is partially true, since I can't ever recall what I read or wrote during my dreams. Sure, I know what book I was checking, I have that book in my books folder, but I can't remember what I read in that book.
Dreams are really cool, but I wish mine weren't so mundane...

I'm not sure where you even got the "tech doesn't work in dreams" thing, but I can say for myself its entirely a myth. I've dreamt of doing all sorts of coherent things with computers, especially if I sleep shortly after using one or after performing demanding computer related task for most of the preceding day. It usually involves a lot of frustration.
Probably the stupidest example of this I have is when I dreamt I was messaging a friend about an incredulously poor marketing email. I soon realized I was missing a leg and thus in a dream. So I willed myself clumsily awake and found not only had I sent the message in the dream in real life, shortly after waking up I recieved a similarly awful speil from the same company as in the dream. After checking with friend and the timestamps of the messages, its likely I was messing with my phone (spam box and messaging program) during slow wave parasomnia and replayed whatever I sensed then later during the REM shortly before waking.

I feel this pain so much, though its usually from accidentally de-anonymizing myself and the stress is enough to wake me up in the middle of the night.

Somewhat related, but I was woken up by my CGM because my blood sugar was low. I was still in a half asleep state so I had this weird dream that I got up and treated my blood sugar. I tried to go back to sleep, but the CGM wouldn't stop telling me my blood sugar was low. I took my 10 minutes to figure out me getting up was a dream

I often dream about using computer, playing games, etc. but I almost never read during dreams - imo long texts are too much for mind to project, whereas using computer is more a visual information - it's easier to recall. In dreams I can only read single words, sometimes I read something not having any sense, but my brain tells me what that means. Once I remember I could read one or two sentences on a paper, I remember seeing letters and words having language-like syntax, but don't remember if they were real. Maybe that's because I use computer more than read books, but don't know.

I've read that some of the centers involved with written language are disengaged during sleep. No idea how legit it is; I'm not a passed-out-ologist or anything. But this article said that certain parts which recognize individual words works, but a part that parses sentences and paragraphs doesn't, so reading ends up seeming tantalizingly possible but kind of slips through one's fingers when you try to actually do complex tasks.
Lines up with my experiences, anyway. I can type a command in a dream, but if I have to read something long something keeps distracting me and I never finish.

I think that dreams are a representation of the
subconscious reallity. For this reason i think that dream with teacnology isn't wear. Think a litle bit on this, people dream with elephants but many never seem a elephan, in spite of that, a lot of people have a mental image of a elephan, and is posible copy that image and paste it in a dream

I dream about getting messages from people on my computer and writing back to them. These are things they didn't even say to me which really screws with me when I have such a dream.

Technology usually works in my dreams, but frequently has bugs. Like i'm using the maps application, and it doesn't react correctly to scrolling. (and of course the layout of the cities are fuarrrked up). And things like commands doesn't work in terminal, or music player doesn't react to pausing/continuing songs. I also use technology frequently. I had a technique for dream checking, and that was picking up random things like air freshener and things like that, and start to read the text on it in a foreign language that i don't talk. That worked most of the time, because my brain can't make up a text in a language i don't know, like polish or slovakian or whatever.

In my dreams everything is buggy, so I think it's normal.
Dujour · 2019-11-05 23:03
Many lucid dreamers say that it does not work properly in most cases, but sometimes it can work properly for some people.
Zhora · 2024-06-11 09:53
i had a dream that adam driver was playing as todd howard for an into in some game and he was about to fall into a trap and the only way to get out was to sit down for hours and play a generic point and shoot version of fallout new vegas

it doesnt make sense that anything would be in any way considering that dreams are broadcasted to you using radios
example if you were suposed to be lucid dreaming it wouldnt make sense if you could dream whatever you like that anything would or would not work, but i dont believe in lucid dreaming, i believe that lucid dreaming is some way to tell you what you believe in.
Mitnick · 2025-07-12 05:34
>dreams are broadcasted to you using radios
Sounds like crazy talk. Where can I learn more?
constantine · 2025-07-12 06:01
i once dreamed that i was in bed playing counter strike, and it did look trippy, however i was not able to discern that it was not real

where are they going to allow anything to be published about that
i feel like theres a lot of clues and gesturing in different medias and a lot of words used today elude to such a thing but nobody is outright talking or complaining about it like they should if they didnt want it
its not going to be easy to find, and you will get censored by the psychology religion for even talking or asking about it in the wrong places
i guess if you consider the demographics of people who credit their school that gives you a clue as to who it may be responsible but i dont believe its the JEW BANKERS ELITES its more like i would question where and how and how the common witch has access to such a thing or even how she is permitted to tell it what to do
