Weird Senses

Agent Smith · 2019-06-06 17:27
Has anyone else ever had their senses in a dream shift to match what they were doing a lot of recently? When I woke up this morning, I found that this was the second time this has happened to me. The first time was after doing a lot of programming, and my sense of sight in the dream was replaced with code. Variables represented myself and the other dream characters, and they're coordinates and the directions they were facing compared to the others updating in real time in front of me. My senses of touch and smell were still there as normal. The second time was after I had recently read a lot of manga. Speech bubbles would appear near people as they spoke, and the scene around me would shift suddenly as if going between panels in a manga. Interested to know if this kind of thing happens to other people and how they experience it.

>>2155 Look into the 'Tetris Effect'. It's very, very normal.

Wow yeah I had that experience once. I had been coding an ECS for a few weeks now, doing all sorts of performance profiling and then writing up my dissertation on it for uni. I had a really vivid dream where everything was made of components. It was really surreal, as everything seemed normal, except everything was perfectly described as these composition of data types. A programmers dream I guess. I miss that world...

I have this a lot, but not in a visual way as you described. Once i had a dream where i was a "robot tree", i didn't had any vision, i just knew that i was a tree doing some programing, like i was a computer, i didn't knew what i was doing, i only had the same sensation as i have when im programing, and that i was doing a lot of complex stuff really fast. Sometimes i have this after playing too much piano or playing some specific game for too long, it happens at least once per month.

>>2155 i remember glitching in and out of blocks a lot after playing lots of minecraft. Pretty annoying. It wasn't even me dreaming yet, it was tha

This happens to me, not in my dreams, but 'on the backs of my eyelids', so to speak, where if I do one thing for the whole day, when I blink, or otherwise close my eyes, and I see, not like usual imagination where I have full, slightly inert control of what I imagine, but where it happens independently, though i can somewhat control it, only if my control leads it in a direction that is within the bounds of the topic, flashes of the content of the topic. when I am engrossed in a story, or a game, or learning something, or practising something, for hours on end, then must stop, I see flashes of images of variatons of that activity. I haven't played MineCraft in the last few years, yet I still have dreams where I'm in a MineCraft-esque blocky world.

>>2193 I get a similar deal to you but more like I can see through my eye lids when I'm trying to get to sleep. The whole form of the room is there but wrapped in a soft blue light. Having an eye mask helps somewhat.

Yeah just a month or so ago I spent several hours working on a linear algebra proof then went to bed. In my dream all of my actions and thoughts felt somehow constrained by vector arithmetic. Like doing anything required me to keep track of trabsformations of some kind of array of... something. It's difficult to describe because I wasn't seeing anything in particular in the dream. More like my thoughts were stuck in linear algebra mode and I had to somehow use that kind of thinking to navigate around the dream space. Similar stuff has also happened to me with programming and certain kinds of video games but I don't have an anecdote handy for those because I tend to forget my dreams.

>>2742 It is called 'the tetris effect'.

>>2744 wow thanks! I didn't knew this had a name. I had the feeling that it was common, even though its pretty rare that people talk about it.

>>2155 I recently am studying a lot of tensor calculus. I don't even know how that is possible but I had a dream in which all of the information was visible only as tensors, I can't remember anything, because in my dreams the sets of tensor made some sense, but in reality they have no meaning, so even though I can remember the tensors I don't know what the fuaark they were supposed to represent.

>>3485 tensor calculus can be used to create coordinate-invariant formulations of physics. An example is the Euler-lagrange equations. They have an exceptionally compact form with tensors. For a mechanical system with lagrangian L on the tangent bundle TM, and a pair of differential n-forms \alpha and \beta such that , for any y a function of only velicty and any x a function of only position, \alpha^dx = 0, \alpha^dy = dy, \beta^dx = dx, \beta^dy = dy (these forms exist, it's just some wankery to construct them), then the motions of a system will coincide with solutions of the PDE dL ^ \beta + d\dt(dL ^ \alpha) = 0 the Hamiltonian formalism also is phrased in tensor calculus and covers even more areas of physics than just mechanics. Also general relativity is phrased in tensor calculus. Basically physics is the study of specific stuff you can do in tensor calculus.

>>3486 sorry, \beta^dx = dx, \beta^dy = 0
Just another Random Lainon · 2020-09-01 17:13
>>3487 also I got a sign mixed up, should be dL^\beta + (-1)^{n+1} d/dt (dL ^ \alpha)

>>2744 Man, that takes me back. There were so many people in Maplestory playing a healer-type character that said that when they closed their eyes, they could see the healing animation. Context: Healing would simultaneously heal your health, and attack enemies vulnerable to holy attacks and so the healers would be spamming heal quasi-continuously whilst training on holiness-vulnerable enemies.
