I don't usually post my dreams on /zzz/, but this is a good one to start anew with. I had this dream last night.
I dreamt I had magical powers and was able to save my dying grandfather's life, but I believe this turned him into a cat. Afterwards, the Church discovered this and executed him by burning. It may have been before the execution that he turned into a cat for some reason.
There was a sense of dread, because I was doing something else when he was executed. I believe I was lead to believe he was already dead. I regretted not being there in his final moments. All of this happened in his bedroom.
The last segment of the dream was me finding the religious leader, probably a priest, who did this and using my magic to torture him until he blasphemed his god. Then I killed him.
The only things that come to mind as to why I'd have this dream are hearing about someone who was burned at the stake by the Church the prior day and also being ill these past few days. What do you think about this dream?

Sounds whack. I unfortunately have no reasoning to give you. Though, I did have a really stupid dream myself.
I woke up. I checked my watch, saw it was Tuesday and I was late for work. I put my socks on. Then I actually woke up to discover that it was 7:00A.M. on a Saturday morning.

No I can help you though maybe. Some things only you will be able to pull the meaning out of, others we can kind of do the whole crazy interpretation stuff.
Im at a point where I always understand the larger themes have my dreams and they have a lot to do with the emotions at play rather then the story. For example a dream about me surviving in an apocalypse with a group is often actually 90% about me desiring feelings of camaraderie and companionship because I often feel very isolated and lonely, and maybe the other bit actually has to do with fears or belief that the world is ending. I know all this just because I can compare how the feelings are brought up and resolved and the way they play on eachother with my real life emotions and piece it together.
I had a dream once about my friend calling me laughing and speaking nonsense and so I was laughing, only to have her friend grab the phone and ask why I was laughing because my friend was sick and delerious and she needed an ambulence. This was about me feeling like I only hurt when I try to help, and even that is a translation. It was at its core just generally resolving this feeling of dissapointment, guilt, and sadness I often experienced in childhood in group projects or sports.
Anyways with that in mind lets continue.
What sort of feeling did having these magical powers create for you? What sort of feeling did him turning into a cat create for you? Im going to assume the other two things, you saving your grandfather and consequently him being burned created a sense of happiness, a kind of tearful joy, and that his burning brought a sense of vengeance, sadness, etc. However as for the burning did you feel more sad or did you feel more vengeaful. The first is often a common dream or thought narrative where we deal with the mourning of a loved one or thing, theres a catharsis to it and it also prepares us. If this is the case the former would be a seperate saviour type fantasy, and I cant quite explain it to you but theres an odd emotional connection between the sort of wallowing sadness of loss and the savior narrative as they both bring that sort of tearful catharsis. If you felt very vengeful the narrative is the revenge one, where someone greatly wrongs us, and its in preperation for it happening. If neither of these fit we can talk more but if its the former savior/sad it sets the context of the dream as a cathartic processing. If it is the revenge one this is a prepratory type dream.
This is probably obvious but the dread is handling the feeling of not doing enough or the fear that we wont be able to be there. The strange thing is whether you were doing something or not doesnt particularly matter, you already have analyzed this feeling yourself just well without me. That feeling and sense of it being your fault is what the dream was trying to process here, that situation and emotions.
The last makes me lean towards this being the prepratory type dream, the revenge narrative. Your magic powers likely only were there in the dream to play this narrative out, sort of like a symbol of that scenario where we imagine kicking someones ass that might be much bigger then us. The magic powers allows you to be fully immersed in this and carry out the revenge perfectly. The thing about this kind of dream is it could be considered "prophetic", you can believe this in a religious spiritual psychic sense but you can also understand it as your subconscious often registers and processes potential future threats and situations it sees coming in a way that might seem to be psychic. We cant say for sure how much the subconscious can sense that we cant consciously, but we know it does sense things we dont consciously and its best to be open minded about how much better it might be when it comes to this. It also sometimes gets it wrong, sometimes the threat isnt real so take it with a grain of salt. So id ask you to think about is there anyone you believe you will be confronting soon, is there anyone you would like to confront? You dont need to act on this at all, because your brain is already doing the job of preparing you. I just wouldnt rule out the possibility of this being related not to a past event but one coming in the future soon. If it does not come, then you can analyze what sort of mindset or subconscious beliefs you might have that created this false need for preperation and gain something from that.
Now for smaller things. Like I said I intuitively know what my dreams are about, but then say if I had this dream I cant know why a cat would be chosen as opposed to any other animal. These sorts of things often reveal something deeper, cultural and generational knowledge. First id think about what kind of meaning and associations you have with cats. Was there a feeling upon him becoming a cat that wouldnt be there if it were another animal, was it a cat you know of or just a cat? If there does seem to be know meaning you can find its then worth looking at what a cat stands for symbolically in your culture. You can do this too with it taking place in a church, your grandfathers bedroom. For example is it your grandfathers bedroom or was it more just important that it was a bedroom. Was the church a church you know of or just a church. This takes effort on your part, you should be able to kind of tell just by thinking about it. Like the dream makes it clear for example that its YOUR grandpa, versus say if it was just an old person. If the dream doesnt make it clear its likely symbolic.
The burning will also provide answers. Your connection to reading about someone being burned at the stake should click and make intuitive sense if thats why it is present. If it does the thing to analyze is why your subconscious saw this reading as particularly important and put it in the context of this dream. Death by burning symbolically in dreams is often though associated with illness and fever, this could be you being sick or it could be a sign that your subconscious is recognizing your grandfather will get sick soon. Im not sure if your grandfather is already dead or dying or if he was just dying in the dream. This will also provide and possibly change a lot.
None of this is fact by the way im just probing and seeing what resonates with you so we can eventually figure it out together. Feel free to say "no im positive thats not it" and also if you answer my questions we can keep sort of reinterpreting until we get something that seems spot on to you.

When I say symbolic by the way I mean as opposed to it being something that only you can dig out because its based on your unique relationship with/towards something and your emotions surrounding it.

What a thoughtful post. I was really only sharing my dream. I already think I understand it well. I'll answer your questions, though.
>The last makes me lean towards this being the prepratory type dream, the revenge narrative. Your magic powers likely only were there in the dream to play this narrative out, sort of like a symbol of that scenario where we imagine kicking someones ass that might be much bigger then us.
That makes sense. I do hold disdain for that type of person.
>So id ask you to think about is there anyone you believe you will be confronting soon, is there anyone you would like to confront? You dont need to act on this at all, because your brain is already doing the job of preparing you. I just wouldnt rule out the possibility of this being related not to a past event but one coming in the future soon.
This is enlightening. I will be preparing for something potentially unpleasant soon. I'll keep this in mind.
>First id think about what kind of meaning and associations you have with cats. Was there a feeling upon him becoming a cat that wouldnt be there if it were another animal, was it a cat you know of or just a cat?
I believe it resembled my pet cat.
>For example is it your grandfathers bedroom or was it more just important that it was a bedroom.
It was his actual bedroom, which I know well.
>Was the church a church you know of or just a church.
What I meant was the people composing the order of the Church, not an actual structure.
>This takes effort on your part, you should be able to kind of tell just by thinking about it. Like the dream makes it clear for example that its YOUR grandpa, versus say if it was just an old person. If the dream doesnt make it clear its likely symbolic.
I recall it rather vividly. It wasn't symbolic in this sense.
>If it does the thing to analyze is why your subconscious saw this reading as particularly important and put it in the context of this dream.
I'll also keep this in mind.
I don't want to go into too much detail about my grandfather. I'll certainly keep what you wrote in mind, though, looking for echoes of this dream, but I don't generally read too deeply into my dreams.

I see, as long as you are able to pull the meaning from it off of what I said thats all that matters. It seems like you got a lot of it figured out which is what I was hoping, that even if I was way off base the way in which I was trying to interpret it would help you.

Have you felt guilty about something recently?

I don't believe so.
