Music and falling asleep

Batou · 2018-08-12 13:00
Have any lainons tried falling asleep with pic related on? It's something about this album that puts me to bed really quick and peacefully. It's like I am focusing on the underlying melody and/or vocals as I am falling asleep and it feels like the surrounding guitar is putting me in a trance as I pass out. I don't really know how to explain it well but when the song switches, I kind of wake back up. No other album/music has had this effect on me, but I have yet to listen to more shoegaze. Has anybody else ever experienced something similar, and are there any other pieces of music that have this effect on you? Album is My Bloody Valentine - Loveless for those who don't know.
Hong, Guil Dong · 2018-08-12 18:02
Try Slowdive or Loveliescrushing, same genre, and have a similar effect.
Drano · 2018-08-12 19:01
Yeah, anything that is droney and constant will do this for me. Believe it or not, Transilvanian Hunger by Darkthrone... I know it's "fast" but there isn't a single tempo change so it doesn't feel fast (like being in a vehicle at a constant speed). The E string drones through most of the album while chords play off it on the higher strings.
The Oracle · 2018-08-14 03:11
The album Tallahassee by The Mountain Goats has the most peaceful vibe, I can always fall asleep to it.
Armitage · 2018-08-14 14:15
>>1497 Really? He is one of my favourite songwriters but peaceful is not always the word that comes to mind. > I hope that our few remaining friends give up on trying to save us > I hope we come up with a failsafe plot to piss off the dumb few that forgave us etc... even when not overt like that there is often a hint of strife in his lyrics.

I can't sleep with the vacuum cleaner left on

>>1488 I've gotten a similar trance state from listening to Loveless before. Shoegaze in general is able to put me in that state. I'm guessing it comes from how you ear perceives the sound and layers of the guitar https://youtu.be/HsFZCRuA4Qs I remember that Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine 's guitarist) talked about how the band played loudly and for a long duration that it also gave them a trance like feel.
Hacker · 2018-09-11 16:38
>>1501 Why did you even try that? To drown out some other noise? Your electric bill must be huge if you do that every night.
Eldon Tyrell · 2018-09-18 21:47
I actually used to listen to Kiri No Ijigen from Lain's OST as I slept and it would give me strange dreams. A lot of times I could use the lyrics from other songs to let me know I was dreaming and make me lucid, though I haven't been able to use it the same way for years. Another thing I noticed is that after falling asleep with a song on repeat, it would sound "new" temporarily after I woke up. It still works to this day actually.
Linda Lee · 2018-09-18 23:34
>>1558 Yes, the same "new" effect happens to me as well. It's a really weird feeling, and "new" is probably the best way to describe it. I've always wondered why it happens.
The Plague · 2018-09-22 02:35
used to fall asleep to this regularly. Probably going to have to give it another go tonight. Another favorite sleepy album for similar reasons is Rock and Roll Night Club. I just take out the two radio bump tracks if I'm going to sleep. One More Tear to Cry is my favorite sleepy song
Rick Deckard · 2018-10-03 19:30
>>1490 I used to fall asleep to that album in high school. You are not alone, lainon.
Jet Black · 2018-10-03 21:31
Great album. It does kind of lull you to sleep as well.

>>1488 Whenever I hear this album for at least 5 seconds it means I will have depression for next week. Anyone with same experience? I am not sure why I act like this, maybe because Lost in Translation, idk. Also, Loomer is such a good track (I would love to hear it without vocals)
Hacker · 2018-10-06 01:11
I’m not familiar with that album, but listening to Aphex Twin and Blank Banshee had some strange effects on my dreams. Problem is for me with listen to music while sleeping though, is it either wakes me up in the night so I end up just turning it off, like I think I was listening to Frank Ocean and one of my favorite parts came on so I woke up. Or my earbuds fall out and none of my headphones are comfy enough to where while sleeping. What do you guys normally wear while sleeping? Or do you use speakers?

>>1488 For the people in this thread who are into Loveless you should check out George Clanton. Probably the best (only?) contemporary shoegaze I've heard, certainly the best since the good ol' days.
Chan Siu Ming · 2019-07-28 22:27
Stone in focus and rhubarb on repeat does it for me

>>1488 Ugh with the nazi get But I love loveless. Kind of feeling it right now considering some personal events. I also love Jesu in the same vein. Not necessarily even similar, but for some reason I group them. Cyann & Ben The For Carnation Failure Also been listening to Oceansize and Dredg and Porcupine Tree and Autolux and a lot of other old bands I totally forgot about because I found my old-ass mp3 player and dumped its data. Always a good time.
Judge Fang · 2019-08-03 18:29
of interest >Butcher said of her "dreamy, sensual" style vocals: "Often when we do vocals, it's 7:30 in the morning; I've usually just fallen asleep and have to be woken up to sing. >they recorded the entire thing mostly at night
Hiro Protagonist · 2019-08-18 11:18
As far as getting to sleep, I've been using this great podcast for meditation and if I was struggling to sleep I would use it again. It's called THE SLEEP MEDITATION PODCAST. I started using it cause where I'm living (transitional housing for addicts)people were too loud in morning program. With its loud rain, sea, river sounds.. Often mixed with thick, droning, binaural beats it drowned out the talking. I meditate during morning acupuncture cause meditation has fine so much good for me plus needles in my ear are woo-woo..epub It's so relaxing and minimalist. When I'm tired I'll often fall asleep trying to meditate to it. I love Sam Harris's WAKING UP APP but sometimes it's too loud here for guided meditation.
Drifter · 2020-04-17 19:33
>>1488 shoegaze also hits me that way, it almost lulls you into a sad, sleepy, peaceful state of mind. However its not like the kind of sleep you have at night, it's more like a wave of sleepiness that overcomes you in the middle of the day.
Lady 3Jane.. · 2020-04-21 10:42
>>2247 >Stone in Focus Aphex definitely has autism for excluding this track in nearly all releases of the album. Attached are the 2 missing album tracks (found on archive.org), and a bonus one from 2017.

>>3145 Also, for me Moby's ambient music does it for sleep: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsTmrD1JqVM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpOfMgN6O40 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWe22qSitJQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxzXcJKIFoM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4BQxwpw4Co

>>1488 My all time favorite Shoegaze is this album by Oeil https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3g6eDjzCqmk It's so calming late at night, it feels like a better time and place.
Hagbard Celine · 2020-07-14 15:24
I usually either listen to vaporwave, or really chaotic metal/hardcore depending on my mood. Jane doe by converge works really well when I need to get lost in a wall of noise. for vaporwave I usually listen to telepath or desert sand feels warm at night, and sometimes I'll throw on ambient noise like flatsound
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2020-07-21 11:06
>>3145 I know right? it always bothered me that Stone In Focus had to be missing from the CD version. On the topic of sleeping to music though most of the times I managed to doze off to this album was with track #14 (also known as Pararell Stripes) Green by Hiroshi Yoshimura is another great album for sleeping.
Naomi Nascimento · 2020-08-05 01:27
>>3354 I agree lainon, it's a really nice EP to put on and pass out to. You might like this if you haven't heard it before, another nice shoegaze EP by a Japanese band: https://youtube.com/watch?v=xgMD6efugcU

>>3446 I second yuragi but you'd probably wake up from that noise at sleeptight. Also this (RAY – Pink), a recent idol (yeah) shoegaze release works for me. https://youtu.be/bmBR6iNnXVY
Donna Hawthorne · 2020-08-06 23:08
>>3448 Sounds good, thanks for sharing. I'm quite a deep sleeper so I don't tend to wake up from the noise. For example, here is a drone/noise album I like to pass out to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euHoHdpGOa0
SHODAN · 2020-08-07 01:12
I personally can't tolerate any sounds excluding natural sounds such as rain, wind, etc. Music just makes sleeping harder for me, in case someone wants an good album that sounds similar to Loveless try listening to Stellarium: Untitled (2009).
Undisclosed · 2020-08-07 17:56
>>3449 Thanks, anon. It sounds pretty nice. I wasn't prepared, though, but it gets soothing after some time, haha. Reminds me of astrobrite (loveliescrushing). You may want to check it out if you haven't already.

>>1488 There used to be a time when I literally couldn't fall asleep without any music playing because I was getting these intrusive voices in my head, not audio hallucinations, but intrusive thoughts of people talking. I can now sometimes fall asleep without any music, because those intrusive thoughts are gone, but I still prefer to have music playing cause my mind tends to be too active to fall asleep. Loveless is great, but 2814 - Birth of A New Day is my go to sleeping album. I remember I used to listen to it for months every night I went to bed.

>>1490 >>1610 Oh wow, I tought I was the only one crazy enough to do it but it's a relief finding out that other people do it as well. I think that for some reason it works really well for this purpose mainly because of its repetitive riffs and overall droneish atmosphere.
Judge Fang · 2021-01-01 15:44
>>1615 I guess the overral feeling of the album is quite a sad one so it's foregone that a sensible listener will engage in those kinds of feelings. For me tho it doesn't quite have the effect you described, maybe because I've listened to it so many times that I've become accustomed to it. Souvlaki on the other hand.....

>>3145 >>2247 i got SAW Vol II and a few others on CD that i put on when i read a book or try to sleep at night. Disc 2 of SAW is slightly modified so Stone In Focus could fit in there

Most music I've listened to create this calm and trance-like effect for me, especially after I got these really good noise cancelling headphones, it feels like my whole body vibrates with the song. Anything ranging from very calm to aggressive (as long as it isn't too loud) is easy for me to fall asleep to, however if I fall asleep to a single song on repeat I wake up sweaty and confused. I recommend "3:36 (Music to Sleep To)" by Poppy.
Random · 2021-02-24 10:36
Actually first time I listened to it, I fell asleep like an hour in. Great experience.

>>1488 I often fall asleep to 009 Sound System's self-titled. I describe it as Trance and House infused with Shoegaze, as it has elements from those genres. People usually know the album for Dreamscape, or maybe even Trinity or With a Spirit, but the entire thing is genuinely amazing, and its sound builds such a unique landscape. I also used to listen to soft Radio, Lo-Fi and Podcasts; It usually depends on what I feel like listening to when I'm about to go to sleep.

>>3830 Birth of a New Day is a great album to sleep to, If we're gonna go with that hazy dreampunk-y vaporwave then Route Back Home was and sometimes is still my go-to. Recently a remix album of it was released, labeled something along the line of Deep Dreampunk. If you, or anyone coming across this is interested in that style, I couldn't recommend these two enough.
